Very fun history - Shorto is one of those rare writers who present their research in a plausible and entertaining way.

Wonderful insights into the early history of the Dutch in New York. Built around recently translated records of New Amsterdam.

It's an interesting story but he tries to extend what it means to be that this was the most important colony. That is silly.

Learned so, so much. Who knew? The writing made it accessible. The information floored me. The history embraced me. I love this book.

Enjoying so far, but I'm a serious fan of David McCullough's work. Another author that has made us all richer.

Spirited defense of Dutch America an essential ingredient of the American melting pot. Nonfiction that reads like a novel, fleshing out well-known characters such as Peter Stuyvesant and others that have been influential but since forgotten, just like the contribution to America of Nieuw Amsterdam itself.

I really like this book. It's a good read and is very informative about a little known time in American history. It is interesting to read about the unique aspects of American life (especially life in New York) that can be traced back to the traditions of the early Dutch settlers.
