Fascinating book... a story within a story. The setting shifts between the Eastern European castle where Danny is facing the cousin on whom he once played an awful, life-changing trick, and a maximum security prison where Ray is taking a writing class.

Fourth book in a row that I've read where everybody dies. Well, not everybody, but almost...

Im sorry to say that I gave up reading this. I have never not finished reading a book, but I just couldn't read anymore. It was the biggest load of poo ever. I am never going to get those hours back. Have not long started it, so I will reserve judgement until i finish it. But so far mmmmm.... im glad it's a thin book.

I liked the gothic aspects of the novel and the dual narratives, but the descriptions were weak so I was a bit disappointed.

Not at all what I expected. Story puts an unneccesary and distracting focus on a certain aspect of every day life that was really annoying. The ending is thrown together so quick and loose ends tied up so apruptly I had to go back and reread certain parts to catch it all. About 2 cousins who experienced a traumatizing event in their childhoods. Now all grown up, one is rich and lives in Europe...more

Now all grown up, one is rich and lives in Europe where he just bought a castle and the other is pretty much a nothing who just floats through life until he is called by his cousin to come help him. Whether he really wants help or is just bent on revenge over what happened when they were young is yet to unfold, and the story is told by a man in prison through his creative writing class who's part in the story is not revealed until the very last pages. The teacher of the prison writing class also has secrets of her own. Sounds intriguing I'm sure, but trust me, it wasn't.   hide

An enjoyable story with a plot line that was interesting and in my view unusual OK the story within a story has been done before, but I thought it was done in an original way. The twist towards the end caught me by surprise and even though the last chapter sort of left one hanging, I didn't mind it - felt like the story couldn't really finish anyway - there would always be a 'what happened next'...more

this book was strange, I didn't get the concept of the book within a book till I was well into it(but maybe I'm just dense LOL) the writing was good, but the story concept was so uneven that it was disruptive. and it was really annoying to constantly announce who which character (danny/howard) was speaking! not her best work, the Goon Squad was much better. Meh.

interesting, suspenseful, enjoyably creepy.
