Was ok, for us that know how the swans came to the waters, it's same-o, same-o. This book came out as a global way of seeing Buddhism.

A fantastic travelogue and an accessible and witty history of the various strains of Buddhism across the world (Europe, the U.S., India, China, Sri Lanka and Japan). This book never really got to the point, especially for a 300 pages. The premise of tracing Buddha's roots and the spread of Buddhism was appealing. Unfortunately this read as a travel journal and didn't tell me anything much new or interesting. I was really disappointed as I like the writer's sense of self and purpose.

This was an excellent book! A great history of Buddhism, without being a boring account of 2500 years. fascinating look at how Buddhism has changed and evolved over the centuries, showing that even Buddhism itself is impermanent.

Interesting look at Buddhism from the perspective of a layman journalist. I enjoyed the interviews and seeing his first hand experience at zen centers. Good book if you're interested in what the world of Buddhism is like for a beginner. Decent read, could of been shorter.

Uh, 1970 called, it wants its baby-boomer Buddhism back! Terrible books can be instructive. Ironically, in a work about the quest for selflessness, the author’s ego dominates. This book is in theory a National Geographic journalist’s travels around the world investigating socially engaged Buddhism.
