The story about a man recounting the story of his life and his exploration of love, found at an unexpected time and place. I felt it conveyed the characters frailty and his realization that the best things in life he's let pass him by in his debauchery. This story is a type of "mental love affair", it has beautiful imagery and is fast-pased.

Imagine discovering love at the tender age of 90. At first when I read what the book was about, I thought it was a bit gross. A 90 year old man celebrating his 90th birthday by hiring a 14 year old prostitute. Not something I could quite grasp. But when reading it, I forgot about the age of the girl and felt more for him that he had never felt true love until 90. He has only ever had relationships with whores and so they feature in his memories quite often. He names his sleeping prostitute Delgadina and we never get to know her real name as I guess she really exists only in his mind. Whilst she is physically present – it seems to be the mere idea of her that catapults him into love.   hide

UNA PERSONA MAYOR DE EDAD TIENE TODO TIPO DE AVENTURAS SOLO UNA NO FUE CONSEDIDA.

The first half has very witty points about ageing, told in first person... after that, it feels as if Gabo didn?t really know how to finish the story /// En la primera mitad del libro el protagonista hace observaciones muy inteligentes e interesantes sobre el hacerse viejo... despues de eso, da la impresion de que Gabo no sabe como acabar la historia...

Written in Marquez's elegant style, it's an unusual love story but also a reflection on old age. Although it's not my favorite GGM book, I enjoyed reading it. I liked the notion that as this young girl lay sleeping, the old man awakens to a romance he has never experienced and really lives - vibrantly, with reckless abandon and emotion - for the first time.   hide
