it's a good story. so good that the "translator's note" chapter really made me believe--until the last few pages, pretty much--that Sayuri-san is real. then i got pissed off at Arthur Golden for his brilliant scheme when i realized that he made that part up just to create such an effect, that all of the storyline and its characters are simply made-believes (ex. Sayuri didn't really permanently...more

Just finished this and didn't love it. I definitely got caught up in the drama of it all but there were a few things with both the style and the story that bugged the hell out of me. First of all the constant similes became laughable after a while. My favorite was some thing like... he regarded him like an icepick regards a block of ice. I think this book would be great as a drinking...more

'Al tempio c'è una poesia intitolata "la mancanza", incisa nella pietra. Ci sono 3 parole, ma il poeta le ha cancellate. Non si può leggere la mancanza, solo avvertirla.' 'La parola "geisha" significa "artista", ed essere geisha vuol dire essere valutata come un'opera d'arte in movimento' 'Non puoi considerarti una vera geisha,...more

The story follows the life of a young Japanese girl, Chiyo, as she is sold into slavery during the Great Depression. It begins in a small fishing village as the 9-year-old's father sells her and her sister, Satsu, to a local businessman. Because of her unusual grey eyes, Chiyo is then sold to an okiya, a geisha house, while Satsu is sold into prostitution. It is amazing that Golden, an American...more

Popular books always disappoint and this book is no exclusion. The fictional story centers around a poor Japanese girl who struggles through life, who is sold at an young age, endures cruel treatment at the Okiya, leads a maid' life but suddenly her life is transformed by Mameha(her older sister) and under her guidance her life changes and she become a successful Geisha. She yearns for the...more

This is by all accounts a painstakingly researched book. Golden's meticulous detail creates a 'pretty' picture and having spent 9 years travelling back and forth to Japan I wanted to enjoy the book a lot more than I did. It just didn't resonate emotionally as sincere or profound. I was hoping it would unfold like a superb piece of theater, where character would transcend the limitations of human...more

Yes, this is a pretty romance novel. Unfortunately, that's all it is. I found it to be nothing more than a Cinderella story mixed in with sex, stereotyping and set in Japan to make it seem as if it were so much more exotic. This is something to read if you like a mindless romance novel with no strings attached - or for those who aren't too interested or aren't too well-versed in...more

I cannot even tell you how much this book means to me. I have read it over and over and over again (each May) and can never get tired of it. It is such a passionate story where you truly feel Sayuri's (Chiyo's) pain, and you realize how much one little glimmer of hope in one's life can do to a person, how it can keep one going strong when they feel there is nothing more to live for. A beautiful...more

The strikingly pretty child of an impoverished fishing family, Chiyo is taken to faraway Kyoto and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house where she is renamed Sayuri. Initially reluctant, Sayuri must finally invent and cultivate an image of herself as a desirable geisha in order to survive in Gion's cruel hierarchy. Through her eyes, we are given a backstage view of the ancient and...more

overall, this was a good read as it was easy to read and engaging. however, there are several things about this book that bother me. since, this is a fictional work written by 1) an American, 2) a man, how true is the protrayal of geisha and women in Japan of that time period?if at least somewhat accurate, it seems that the treatment of women has two sides to it. its interesting that the...more
