Liked it but it did not have the light, effortlessness that other Barnes books have. I was expecting a lovely soufle and ended up with an english pork pie. Fine if that is what you want!

It started slow - took awhile to get into it - but once things started happening in the book it was fun to read. It took you through Arthur's and George's childhoods in detail. I'm not sure that was necessary. But I would definitely recommend this book.

"arthur & george" started out well and had the potential to be a really fun and creative piece of historical fiction. instead, it was too long, not very historical, and quite dull, especially the last 50 pages, which i definitely skimmed. no spoiler here- the ending was just boring. characters were less than fully developed, and once the plot became clear, it just kind of rushed to its...more

While this book was engaging, it wasn't transporting. Fans of the history and literature of the late 18th and early 19th century might find this an instructive read. I found it more educational than artistic.

The plot development of this is masterful and it gets revealed so slowly that I didn't have a clue why these stories were being told for several chapters, not knowing anything about the book. However the writing was compelling enough to keep me interested and by the end I was completely involved with and intrigued by the two protagonists.

A great read. Similar to Devil in the White City since there are parallel stories that get wound together. I looked up some of the facts on the book and they seem to be true. Interesting to know about the life of Conan Doyle

A Man Booker finalist, this book is about the parallel lives of Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes mysteries) and George Edalji, a quiet solicitor wrongly imprisoned for mutilating animals. Their lives intersect; it's based on a true story and is an interesting social study.

To the point that it traces the contrasting but eventually intersecting lives of two contemporaries, Arthur and George, this book is successful. Barnes performs beautiful character studies of both men, and delivers a slow, excruciating, mesmerizing account of persecution and narrow-mindedness. But the book falls flat in the second half, forgetting its momentum and switching over to an inordinate...more

Fascinating premise, and was really strong through the central section, but took a while to get going & did seem to peter out!
