I am a big fan of James Herbert, and this book lives up to his legend. All though not as brilliant in my eyes as Once its still a great tale. It got all the ingedients for a spooky read, where you can feel the hairs on your neck stand up. Yupp, he is certainly the master of spooks! A good, old fashioned, ghost story. With not just one ghost to be worried about! There is evil at Crickley Hall...more

I found the start of this book to be slow going, alot of scene setting goes on for the first hundred pages or so. The pace picks up in the middle of the book and I really started to enjoy it, until in the last third of the book he introduces another character into it and we have to be painfully force fed his background. Creepy and dark, if a little cliched at first (oh look, we're going to live in a big spooky mansion in the middle of nowhere - what a surprise, it's haunted!). But like most Herbert novels, it has a few fresh takes of a very, very tired idea. An enjoyable read, even if the narrative just skip characters PoV rather more than is entirely necessary.

Anyway, not a bad read but slow in places and quite...more

Superb book, super scary too. This is my first James Herbert novel and I was hooked straight away. It really was like sitting down and watching a spooky horror that made you jump. I could actually visualise what the house looked like and that's rare. Would definately recommend, but don't read it late at night whilst you are alone!
