Such a good book. Like a rich glass of red wine on a wintry night, it warms your soul. Filled with beautiful imagery, great characters and fantastic historic detail. Read it, read it!

I don't quite know what to make of this book.. it started off a little slow. I also thought it could have been condensed into a shorter and more effective story; by the last chapter, Grace's little hints-but-not-quite-telling-us-what-happened starts to wear a little thin. Also it was a tad unrealistic; the way Grace's speech on the tapes was written is not like spoken speech at all.But apart from...more

I have the Advanced Readers' Edition. This is a very good read for a long evening curled up on the couch with your bevereage of choice. Morton does a tremendous job setting the mood of pre- and post-World War I Great Britain as Grace trawls through her memories from the vantange point of 98 years of age. Be warned,...more

Wow, what a book - ok si its on Richard and Judy's book list but forget that and give it a go. The characters are well constructed and I felt as though I really connected with the main characters. Without giving too much away I did shed a tear over the beautiful writing over a characters death. If you only read a few books a year make this one.....

A beautiful book, flits easily between present day and the past, witha mystery that makes you keep reading as you're desperate to find out what happened. A new favourite. Other reviews say that the next book by this author - 'The Forgottten Garden' is better, but I have to disagree, this is by far the better of the 2.
