In 1914, when she was 14, Grace came to Riverton Manor as a housemaid. There she met the Master's grandchildren, David, Hannah, and Emmeline, whose lives would forever be linked with her own. Now, at the age of 98, Grace looks back at those early years of duty and service, selflessness and silence, and narrates her story while there is still time. A beautiful story full of such hope. Be warned,...more

Such a good book. Like a rich glass of red wine on a wintry night, it warms your soul. Filled with beautiful imagery, great characters and fantastic historic detail. Read it, read it!

Very much enjoyed this book and was impressed by how the author moved back and forth between the present and the past. Highly recommend.

I have the Advanced Readers' Edition. This is a very good read for a long evening curled up on the couch with your bevereage of choice. Morton does a tremendous job setting the mood of pre- and post-World War I Great Britain as Grace trawls through her memories from the vantange point of 98 years of age. The narrative becomes overlong in places but the writing is good and should see you...more

Kjent engelsk setting. Litt treg i begynnelsen, men en god bok synes jeg. Kan anbefales de som liker engelske "upstairs ans downstairs" romaner.

Wonderful! This book made me reluctant to read anything for months after relishing the last page, and since I'm normally a book worm, that's one hell of an achievement. The gripping, fast paced plot locks your eyes iresisably into the story, making it the, in my opinion, best book ever.

Wow, what a book - ok si its on Richard and Judy's book list but forget that and give it a go. The characters are well constructed and I felt as though I really connected with the main characters. Without giving too much away I did shed a tear over the beautiful writing over a characters death. If you only read a few books a year make this one.....
