more In this 2nd book of the Shadowdwellers series in Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalker stories, we learn more about the religious infrastructure of the Shadowdwellers, especially from it's leader Magnus. When he was betrayed by the very handmaiden that seved him for over 2 centuries... Magnus is reluctant to take on a new handmaiden, but his Goddess Drenna gives him visions of Daenaira that he cannot ignore. When he finally finds her and pays the bride price for her... he doesn't realize that her aunt and uncle had cruelly enslaved and tortured her since she was 7, and had told her she had been sold to someone else. She hadn't been raised and educated as any other Shadowdweller would have been... and the 2 must learn to trust one another in order to learn more about the corruption that is at the very center of Sanctuary, a center that MAgnus had helped create!
Lots of plot twists and sexual tension! Jacqueline Frank has created an amazing world with the Nightwalkers, and the Shadowdwellers even stand apart from other Nightwalkers, as any type of light would blind and burn them to ash! Living underground, as well as traveling to and living in areas where the nights are longer (ex. Alaska in the Winter), the Shadowdwellers are trying to find stability after civil war is finally ended. There are always those that would prefer chaos to peace, though, which makes things tougher on the monarchy and religious leaders!
Great read! Looking forward to the next one!!
