A very interesting way of telling a story, but a disappointing ending.

Set in the early-mid twentieth century in rural Ontario, Wright captures exactly the culture and the mannerisms. It's both sweet and progressive. If you're into historical fiction or "strong women" type books, you'll love it.

Read it on disc...loved it, loved it, loved it. Two very different sisters choose quite different paths in their lives...one is a school teacher, the other a free spirit who leaves her small town for New York. What becomes of them will surprise you.

I liked this. The format (using letters and journal entries to tell the story) sucked me in. Social history as a novel.

I enjoyed it. I'm not sure it resides among 'great literature', although Wright has plenty of awards to show for his efforts. The story sort of meanders and then ends abruptly (I thought), and the afterword was a little puzzling; I didn't think it really added to the story, but I guess he felt that it would tie up loose ends. But it was a fun, quick read and I liked the main character Clara.

One of the worst books I've ever read, but for some reason I refused to put it down. The characters were completely unbelievable and I was often bored to tears. Plus, what was up with the afterword?
