Quite hilarious, and acute. The middle seemed to drag on, and the plot kind of stopped for a hundred pages, and I got tired of melancholy observations about sparse fields, but in the end, it was an excellent read. I am so glad I'm not in a fundamentalist religion. Reminds me of Rapture of Canaan. A really sad book. "I had a thought, on the way home from the rock field, that the things we...more

Wasn't really into this novel while I was reading it, though I could see from the detail that provides so little (and yet so much) why it had won an award. It wasn't until I reached the ending that I saw what truly made it great, the complicated kindness the characters display in order to free the ones they love of hurt, of isolated lives. Really good book. Lives up to its title.

this is a good book to read if you are trying to remember what it was like when you were a sixteen-year-old girl in a big small town where you were supposed to think about god a lot, or if you've never been one of those and want to know what it might be like or if you think you secretly are one in undetectable circumstances. what i mean is: good job, ms. toews. you are a hero to us all.

While I enjoyed the book as a whole the depressing tone made me incredible sad. While reading I would find myself putting the book down because I needed a break from the sadness. Because I was constantly taking breaks this book ending up taking forever to read... My recommendation...only read this book if you're ready to invest time and energy. Definitely not a ligtht easy read.

The absolute most boring and terrible book I have ever read. If I didn't have OCD about finishing what I start (especially with respect to books) I would have stopped after the second chapter. The plot is shoddy at best and there is no really likable or endearing qualities about the protagonist. The ending leaves you empty and pissed off, with too many things left unresolved or unexplained......more

Another highly recommended novel by me. I enjoyed this book, it took me awhile to read as I only read it at nights when I had a few spare moments while I was at a camp in the US. However, extremely interesting and an insight into a different type of world altogether. The first of Toew's novels that I have read but a wonderful start to a great reading friendship. Her style is very unique and...more
