Things are not as they should be, however, in the sheriff’s small, protected domain. The outside world draws near, and threats multiply: the arrival in the district of a band of exotic, major league criminals; an ambitious and aggressive deputy; the self-destructive exploits of a local bad boy; Wing’s discovery of a domestic crisis. Small-town folksy, hard-boiled sherrif. A lot of people want him to employ the new ways of policing for a modern age, but Sheriff Lucian Wing usually finds that his old methodical ways still work best to get him through both work and personal crises. A great Vermont setting and some decidely modern Russian criminals make for a great read. This book is truly a gripping thriller, even though at times you feel that you have never left Mayberry.   hide

At first I was disappointed that it was so short - then I was ecstatic - I haven't had time to read a book in one night in a few long time. It actually took two nights. Sometimes the language trips you up b/c it's not always grammatically correct but, I enjoyed it.

It is firmly rooted in the homespun charm school of American fiction, where the wisdom of rural types is more than a match for the city sophisticates. At the same time it deals with thoroughly modern themes; how the race for achievement, or rather to show achievement, can work against common sense.

It is firmly rooted in the homespun charm school of American fiction, where the wisdom of rural types is more than a match for the city sophisticates. At the same time it deals with thoroughly modern themes; how the race for achievement, or rather to show achievement, can work against common sense.

Castle Freeman’s work is not particularly original in this approach, but “All That I Have” is a classic example of the genre.

Do not go away with the impression that nothing happens. Despite having less than 150 pages the book is crammed with incident and the story belts along at a cracking pace.

But the real attraction of the novel is how the good guys win. They do it with wit, style and panache and prove that sometimes modernism is not the best way.

This is a fantastic wee novel which anybody should enjoy.   hide
