An authoritative guide to natural childbirth and postpartum parenting options from an MD who home-birthed her own four children.Sarah Buckley might be called a third-wave natural birth advocate. A doctor and a mother, she approaches the question of how a woman and baby might have the most fulfilling birth experience with respect for the wisdom of both medical science and the human body. Using current medical and epidemiological research plus women's experiences (including her own), she demonstrates that what she calls "undisturbed birth" is almost always healthier and safer than high-technology approaches to birth. Her wise counsel on issues like breastfeeding and sleeping during postpartum helps extend the gentle birth experience into a gentle parenting relationship. less
Wonderful resource on gentle and natural approaches to birth and child rearing by a doctor who isn't afraid to share her own beautiful birth stories. I highly recommend it!

Excellent book especially the first part "gentle birth". Written by a doctor a mother of four all born at home. She presents the benefits of a natural undisturbed birth backed with medical evidence and shares her own stories and experiences. The second part "gentle mothering" basically follows the attachment parenting philosophy.
I didn't find the whole thing relevant, so skipped through some bits. It was worth the read, even though I ended up not being able to have the natural birth I wanted, it's worth learning about the natural process of birth.

The second-half of the book is already proving worthwhile for practicing attachment parenting with Elaine. Buckley is gentle in her suggestions...not engaging in angry rhetoric to make the point for natural birth but providing the facts and encouraging the reader to...more
