This is a fantastic book. Anyone interested in how India shifted from being the centre of the Britich Empire to gaining Independence 100 years later shoudl read this. The characters are wonderfully drawn and the tension carries throughout.

One third colonial insanity, one third british grit and one third pathetic comedy, the Siege of Krishnapur makes for several hundred pages of small print entertainment. Let not the harsh introduction deter you from meeting the small squadron of mostly made-up soldier that will defend Krishnapur to the bitter end. Your nose will feel that trickling drop of sweat in the Indian summer as you rush through its pages, seldom stopping at the full stops. The way of English and their melancholy life among the natives - a better account, if any, might have come from the Macaulay's, Dupherin's and the Canning's only. You can see the stale chapatis in front of your eyes, flies swarming around and its rotten stench...more
