I am a novice in the history of Algeria and its liberation struggle from France. I found this book interesting and very informative although most of the major players in this history were before unknown to me.

A thorough history of the war, but the author makes assumptions about our knowledge of French politics which sometimes makes it a little hard to follow.

aug 07. like all of alistair horne's books, very well written. if all you know about the war is from the film, the book fills out the story. de gaulle comes out looking like a hero, making difficult decisions when it became clear that a harmonious solution would not be easily achieved. ultimately he brought france into the modern, western world by extricating it from algeria; whether he did what...more

probably the best history book I've read recently. An intense and extremely well written account of a most savage and sad conflict of imminent relevance to our current conflicts

Detailed analysis of the Algerian War of Liberation. For anyone who wants to know the cause and effects of this brutal conflict, Horne has done an admirable job of detailing it.

The piece of the book that really struck a nerve was the fact that France slid so close to military dictatorship and possible civil war after long struggles with national liberation movements. Considering that the United...more

An astonishing book in its breadth and depth. Although no brutality in this despicably violent war goes uncovered, it is still a very good and comprehensive read. I understand that this is the authoritative text on this war in both English and French

I read this book after a history professor recommended it. I knew little about the conflict (and "conflict" is perhaps at best an understatement) beforehand but this book gave me a thorough, well-rounded insight. There is much detail about the politics, economics, and social aspects of the war, as well as solid background of Algeria as a French colony and also of the key players on both sides. An...more

This book has many merits, and a few serious flaws. The merits are that it is a complete introduction to the war, but also fairly comprehensive. It is very well written - reviews call it a great literary work. That it is not necessarily a great historical work is another matter. It is, I think, basically racist, and the moral compass is underwhelming. Horne basically reserves moral...more

Research for novel-writing, but very well-done, exciting read.
