The picture that figures so prominently in Oscar Wilde's novel contradicts not the aesthetic doctrine of art divorced from morality but its more extreme offshoot: that of living life as an expression of making art, free of moral considerations. For it is one thing to insist that "all art is quite useless"--that is, without overt moral value--and another to direct...more

This is the first and only book i have ever read from Oscar Wilde. And i can now understand why he is regarded with such high esteem. This book focuses on one man's obsession with perfection and eternal youth. But you don't get anything for free in list and comes with a price. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

“It is only shallow people who do not judge by appearances,” says Lord Henry to Dorian. This is a great, gothic example of the Victorian literary movement of asceticism, a life filled with opulence and frivolity in the face of actually serious issues. The magical realism of Dorian’s un-aging life is expressive in showing the key issue of how his “life was his art”—something many...more

Favorite quotes: Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul. How pleasant it was in the garden! And how delightful other people's emotions were! - much more delightful than their ideas, it seemed to him. One's own soul, and the passions of one's friends - those were the fascinating things in life. In the wild struggle for existence, we want...more

The Picture of Dorian Grey is arguably the best work from the ever-quotable Oscar Wilde, this novel is a guide for how to live a life of pure decadence. It is packed with impeccable wit, clever one-liners and an excessive amount of egotistical vanity. The Picture of Dorian Gray is a tale of a youth whose features, year after year, retain the same appearance of innocent beauty while the...more

Another required book in my study of the aesthetic movement. This prologue was my particular favorite since it was Wilde's attempt to break away from the aristotelian methods of criticism. Thanks to the ever rising popularity to DeSade, Ulysses, Alice in Wonderland, A Clockwork Orange, etc, we can agree that one cannot determine if a book is moral or immoral but whether it is a good book...or a...more

It is a magnificent book that taps into our psyche and shows us how we can succumb to our basest desires and cut free from our conscience with out knowing what triggered the awakening of such dark thoughts. To live without compassion, love and only for desire and very possible and it seems alluring in this book but the end shows what happens when one succumbs to an egotistic lifestyle....loved...more

There was a point while reading this book when I actually yelled at the book: "You're a 38-year-old man! Stop flinging yourself petulantly onto sofas!" Somewhere in this book, buried beneath ridiculous prose and insipid characters, is a somewhat interesting story, though not interesting enough to warrant wading through the ridiculousness and insipidness. I picked it up because I...more
