I really enjoyed the photos which all tied in perfectly t the story. A truly imaginative tale which at times was quite scary.

Really unique and well told story. The pictures are a great addition and it had me satisfied at the end, but still wanting more. Can't wait for the next one!

Sorta spooky - love the concept! Ending sort of left you hanging, but worth a read.

I hated this book. Worst book I've read all year. The writing was clunky and hard to get through. An over-abundance of "big" words in what I can only see as an attempt to sound "literary". It came off as sounding silly and just trying too hard. The characters were one dimensional, the plot was boring, the storyline was something a child could have made up. The use of old photos to tell the story...more

"I'd always known I was strange. I never dreamed I was peculiar." So says Jacob, whose Jewish grandpa has been telling him horrific stories of peculiar (gifted with odd & unusual talents) children in a safe house on a remote Welsh island, where he was taken to escape the Holocaust. Little does Jacob know these tales are true. Vintage photos fill the book and add to the authenticity.

From a teacher's perspective, this book rocks! This is the kind of book that gets today's kids reading. Granted, the story is geared toward YA, mainly due to some crass language and difficult themes, but middle grade students are probably the ones who will most benefit from this book. The plot was fun, there was action aplenty, the pictures were wicked. Lots going on here to keep the kids...more

This book was far too short and I read it as slowly as I could. Ransom Riggs' has a writing style that I enjoyed; and I re-read many chapters just to experience it again more fully. The story is creepy, intriguing, 'peculiar,' a bit of sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and drama.. all in a story less than 230 pages. And the photos.. you'll just have to read it to see. I had no troubles reading this...more

Terrific read. Creepy, quirky, mysterious. Great elements of historical fiction and sci-fi combine to make a captivating story. This would make a terrific movie. I want to read more about these peculiar children. I'm crossing my fingers for a sequel. The pictures really add to the creepiness factor.

My expectations for what this book was going to be about were better than the actuality. I loved the first part of the book, but by the middle to the end the plot line got a bit boring for me and seemed more of a book young adults would be into. However, for the use of the actual old-time creepy kid photos, I give it kudos.
