I wouldn't have expected to find myself reading, at the age of 46, a series of books based on little plastic toy soldiers that you stick together and paint. But these aren't toy soldiers, they're Space Marines, bio-engineered warriors of the Imperium, the faithful sons of the Emperor, the power-armour clad hammers of humanity's many foes. If you know what I'm talking about, then you'll enjoy these books. Ben Counter is a surprisingly good writer and these are tightly written, fast paced action novels, worthy additions to the Warhammer 40k universe. If you don't know what I'm talking about, hope a tyrannid genestealer doesn't turn up in your garden.   hide

Really cool book illustrates how a marine chapter can fall from grace due to pride and missplaced faith in their own superiority.

Decent story, good plot, but the characterizations leave much to be desired. Aside from a few characters, the members of the Soul Drinkers are almost interchangeable. Counter's descriptions of his villains are great, and Counter seems to know when to delve into details and when to gloss over the action.
