Now, I really understand why this was one of last year's best sellers. I really loved the characterisation and in particular, the develpoment of the time traveller, Henry himself moreso than Clare, the actual "Time Traveller's Wife". I have always been a fan of stories about time travel and I also loved how descriptive Audrey Niffenegger was in a very simple way as opposed to be overtly verbose. The ending could have been better but I did very much enjoy the journey and I didnt like how they tried to explain it using gentic science. WTF?   hide

It was a beautiful story. Almost an epic love story. As long as you didn't think too hard on how time travel worked and all the little things, it was a great book. This was one of the best novels I have ever read. The beginning of the book starts out a bit confusing and you are left wondering what is really going on. If you want a book that breaks the rules of common literature and challenges your mind but also pieces in challenging life issues and a romance this is the book for you.   hide

AWFUL! I expected a love story interspersed with fantastical moments of time travel. I got a non-chronological list of sexual exploits and other morally bereft acts including contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The main characters are extremely selfish and their relationships do not demonstrate any qualities of love. Moreover, I was disgusted by the depictions of the relationship between mother and child. I dont know any mother who would describe nursing her newborn child as holding a sucking bag of skin and fluid! Nor would any sane woman bury fetuses from multiple miscarriages in her flowerbed like so many pet goldfish. One of my least favorite books of all time.   hide

Beautiful love story, unconventional situation. A story about love, loss and holding on. I was totally absorbed into the world of Clare and Henry, moved to tears by their strong affections for each other. Being always the one who was left behind is so sad. The ending is not really a happy ending but maybe Clare was considered lucky than a lot of women as she still have the chance to see the man of her life once again in old age. However, how she went one from her loss and spent her time waiting and waiting is heartwenching. This book makes me ponder over the questions whether love of such depth will exist over time and last throughout time. Would one be willing to wait her life out and live in memories even if they were so beautiful? Sometimes, an absence is more than a presence, like a damaged nerve, and will eat your life out. However, maybe that is whjy the love story is beautiful.Because of the wait.   hide

It was certainly hard to put down. I had watched the movie first and it was recommended that I read the book. I understood a lot more of the motivations and conflicts by reading the book, but I did not appreciate the language or the detailed descriptions of "love". All I can say is how extraordinarily the author pulled this novel(ty)together. It must have been difficult to put in only certain things leaving others to wait even though chronologically they were a huge part of the story line! It must have been difficult to put in only certain things leaving others to wait even though chronologically they were a huge part of the story line! But the story comes together in a remarkable way, stretching the imagination the whole time and keeping the reader wholly engaged. As to characters, I couldn't really warm up to Henry, but given his condition, it's simply hard to relate. Clare however is a real gem. I recommend this to those who enjoy reading different types of literature or who just seek a unique perspective on life.   hide

I did not like this book at all. The plot was wonderful, but the characters were cold and twisted. There is a lot of vulgar content in this book, which is probably why I did not like it or finish it. I also thought that the obsessive dependence that the characters had on each other made the book very unattractive. I really like this book. It's a combination of science fiction and romance. Can't wait to watch the movie! It's a very creative plot about how this guy is able to time travel but he can't control where he goes in time and to which time he will travel to. But every time he travels through time, he will always happen meet this girl/woman, who eventually became his wife. They had to go through a lot of emotional turmoil when she tried to get pregnant and gets a miscarriage every time. I love the ending of this book and it would be truly amazing if time traveling is possible in real life!   hide
