Awesome book from a truly gifted author with the weirdest sense of timing. That, btw, is his USP. Read this one to know why humor defeats depression hands down. I read it overnight, gripping stuff. If you have a kid/know a kid coping with study related stress, bind him to a chair and make him read this book, ok, dont do the former, but give the child this book and he'll really thank you, PROMISE.

The novel is set in the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in the period 1991 to 1995. It is about the adventures of three mechanical engineering students (and friends), Hari Kumar (the narrator), Ryan Oberoi, and Alok Gupta, who fail to cope with the grading system of the IITs and come to be known as five pointers due to their perennially low 5 point something GPA's. The book is narrated in the first person by Hari, with some small passages by his friends Ryan and Alok, as well as a letter by Hari's girlfriend Neha Cherian. It deals with the lives of the three friends whose elation on making it to one of the best engineering colleges in India is quickly deflated by the rigor and monotony of academic work. Most of the book deals with the numerous attempts by the trio to cope with and/or beat the system as well as Hari's fling with Neha who just happens to be the daughter of Prof. Cherian, the domineering head of the Mechanical Engineering Department. While the tone of the novel is humorous, it takes some dark turns every now and then, especially when it comes to the families of the main characters. Most of the action, however, takes place inside the campus as the boys, led by the ever creative Ryan, frequently lamenting how the internationally lauded IIT system has stifled their creativity by forcing them to value grades more than anything else. Uninspiring teaching and numerous assignments adds to their woes although the boys do find a sympathizer in Prof. Veera, the new fluid mechanics professor.   hide

This book instantly made me fall in love with Chetan bhagat’s writing. It was much more than say beautiful. A lot of thing about this book makes me feel very happy. Its more to do with the story; story about 3 friends, who weren’t exactly the average students at the Most reputed institute in India. Their friendship saga.. love, fights, pressure, sacrifice and lot more. I could easily relate...more

This book instantly made me fall in love with Chetan bhagat’s writing. It was much more than say beautiful. A lot of thing about this book makes me feel very happy. Its more to do with the story; story about 3 friends, who weren’t exactly the average students at the Most reputed institute in India. Their friendship saga.. love, fights, pressure, sacrifice and lot more. I could easily relate it with my life incidents as I grew up doing my schooling in residential school. There have been many small events throughout the book that moved me a lot. Thumbs up to Chetan Bhagat. This definitely has to be his masterpiece, anything better than this is just unthinkable!!!!...   hide

First fictional work I read.. hmmm.. very filmy!.. As I was a filmy freak before I got my passion for books I enjoyed reading it then.. But when I look back I place this novel as an average one.. Just about average. Isnt it a film script?. hmmmm.. Thats the reason Y film-makers are making a film on it.. ha ha.. There is nothing much I remember from this book.. Just a few though which I shall summarize. I loved Neha.. Just her name is enough.. ha ha.. I loved the chapter Neha speaks.. Her brothers character, Samir is very well brought into the sequence of the flow of the story.. characterization is really good in this book.. Loved Ryan when he secretly reads those letters sent by his parents and the climax part was quite funny.. This is all I remember from the book!   hide
