Interesting read.  A different view of how thai girls end up in various jobs due to the changing economy in Thailand (mainly because of tourism).  Gave me a different perspective as to why thai girls may leave their families in the poor north to send money home from their jobs in the south.

A book you can tell that a well-meaning lecturer, wanting to teach his young adult students the realities of tourism in a developing country came up with this book. It is culturally insightful about Thai life and issues of cross cultural relationships (not just romantic but commercial as well).  A book you can tell that a well-meaning lecturer, wanting to teach his young adult students the realities of tourism in a developing country came up with this book. It is culturally insightful about Thai life and issues of cross cultural relationships (not just romantic but commercial as well).  Interesting critique is brought out by many of the discussions the characters have together, particularly the various travelers the hero, Ben, runs into. The hardest part for me though was that the hero was stupendously hypocritical (and just stupid) in nature that I did not have any sympathy for him, which didn't help the story.   hide

A good light read. Funny at times because of the pain in the ass girlfriend, which I can relate to. And interesting to read a Thai woman's story. 
An excellent read on culture subject of which there is not enough samples. The story is believable, yet a story, and funny at times because of the pain in the ass white girlfriend, which I can relate to. Interesting to here a Thai woman's story.

This book has gone down in infamy in my former bookclub as the worst book ever. The poor girl who suggested it has never lived it down.
Can I give it negative stars? Save yourself - put this book down and walk away!
Save yourself - put down this terrible book and run away. Run away!!!

Not the kind of book that appeals to me, this book was read at the tail end of a backpacking trip through Thailand.  I was out of reading material and my traveling companion had finished the book and was bringing it home as a gift for her daughter. The book did not disappoint my expectations of it.  Not the kind of book that appeals to me, this book was read at the tail end of a backpacking trip through Thailand.  I was out of reading material and my traveling companion had finished the book and was bringing it home as a gift for her daughter. The book did not disappoint my expectations of it.  It was as simple, unappealing, racist, sexist and mainstream as I anticipated.The beige story of a young  UK man and woman traveling together through Thailand, struggling with their relationship.  He finds himself attracted to one of the young local women, who performs Thai massage on the beaches.  The Exotic as an overwhelming sexual appeal and need-to-conquer of western males -- what a novel concept.  The young Thai woman was only one white western male away from salvation.  Oh, and we mustn't forget the coming-of-age story for the jilted girlfriend -- all the better for this sad adventure in Thailand.   hide
