I was out of reading material and my traveling companion had finished the book and was bringing it home as a gift for her daughter. The book did not disappoint my expectations of it. It was as simple, unappealing, racist, sexist and mainstream as I anticipated. The beige story of a young UK man and woman traveling together through Thailand, struggling with their relationship. He finds himself attracted to one of the young local women, who performs Thai massage on the beaches. The Exotic as an overwhelming sexual appeal and need-to-conquer of western males -- what a novel concept. The young Thai woman was only one white western male away from salvation. Oh, and we mustn't forget the coming-of-age story for the jilted girlfriend -- all the better for this sad adventure in Thailand.
