It is one of the best books I've read in a long time. The prose is magical, it takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary. The book shows life and relationships for what they both really are, flawed, but beautiful.
Has to be one of the best books I've ever read. I read it in about 4 hours. At one point I had to put it down for about an hour because I was so sad. But I finished it. I cried pretty much the whole way through the book but found the ending splendid. It's great.
absolutely loved this book. it's a touching story about life, love, and those things we need to remember, as well as the after-life, told from the prospective of a very smart 14 year old girl, who was brutally murdered by a neighbor.
Very unique perspective on death and its impact on the living. I felt very drawn in at times. Parts of the writing was very smooth and well written where the intensity and the emotion of the characters pulled in you and forced you to participate as a reader. Yet, there were parts of the novel that I found myself skimming over--moments of redundancy, I guess. All in all though, a very good...more

I would recommend it for it's fresh and innovative point of view. hide
I thought it was good in some parts but there were times when I was confused whether she was speaking in the present or the past. It did not end quite like I thought. It just kind of dropped of for me. Also, this was supposed to be from the mind of a 14 year old and I feel as if it was unrealistic to have been said by a 14 year old mind in the way that it was written.
The beautifully written story of a little girl who is brutally murdered and watches from heaven as her family puts the pieces of their broken lives back together. Alice Sebold is a true storyteller. I marveled at how she was able to write so honestly with humor and pain blended so seamlessly, making the novel feel authentic and real. All the characters have this feel. errie yet beautiful. I was eager to read it in the one go. Really shows how we can reclaim what was once ours and it's not until tragedy strikes that we can truely value life itself.
This was such a good story. The first chapter is very graphic and very hard to read. However, if you can make it past the first chapter, the rest of the story is gripping and actually has you sitting on the edge of your seat! Great book, and I cannot wait for the movie!
