I'm not sure how this whole discussion thing works...i just wanted to make a comment... I was just reading this book last week i think. I decided I wanted an easy and relaxing read, and I picked it up off the B&N bookshelf. I read the chapter Riddles in the Dark, which had many notations throughout the chapter. I found out that there were 2 versions of The Hobbit that Tolkien wrote...and one of the 'clarifications' that Tolkien had to make in the second book included mentioning that Gollum was a 'little creature', in stead of just the word 'creature.' After the 1st version was released, many different European countries (such as Germany) depicted Gollum as quite big in the images in their books (with legs hanging outside of a small boat). Fun fact.
