There are way too many reviews to go through so thought I would start a discussion on whether people found this scary or not? I personally found nothing scary at all in the book but know of people that were scared witless when they read it.. To me it's not a horror book at all and I was wondering what other people feel about it

The book really didnt scare, me the movie did. That's one that i would have to re-read, i read it as a child and i do remember that it didnt scare me however. that damn clown from the move...LOL..that thing gave me a clown complex.

The movie definitely scared me more than the book. It was the first King novel I ever read at 12 years old. I was captured by the story of friendship and standing up against something that feels much larger than yourself. The clown was definitely scary as hell! ;)

I am with the general consensus. The book was interesting, a thriller but not a horror. But after the movie, clowns still freak me out.

Wow.. wasn't expecting anyone to reply so thanks everyone.. have to say was really, really disappointed with the film.. was nothing like the book (or how my imagination saw it so can honestly say it didn't scare me either).. made a decision after seeing the film never to watch another SK book that's been made into a film and will my imagination do it's stuff.

I have just finished reading this book for the first time. I found certain parts of the book incredibly scary. The scariest moment for me would have to be when Ben returns to Derry as an adult and is in the library alone. The clown turns up and basically tells him point blank that he is going to kill him and his friends. It was like the gloves were finally off; it is harder to scare a grown man than it is a child. All the attempts by It to scare the adults was frightening. Beverly in her house and Mike in his library within the fridge for instance. I agree though that the story is incredibly character driven and that can sometimes take away from the horror aspect. On the whole though i would have to say scary. I have also recently purchased the DVD and will compare book and movie shortly.
