Bessie is possibly the most complex "small character" in the novel she plays the "mother figure" to jane but is complex because of her incoistent love towards Jane and her inability to find the right punishment for her.

Bessie teaches jane not only to love, but to express her love for others. It is this fundemental lesson that follows Jane throughout and gives her the perceverance and dedication not only to leave Rochester but, to wait until she was his social equal.

Bessie is not just a mother figure to Jane but also an ally and possibly shares janes "childish" hatred towards Mrs Reed. Jane describes Bessie as "the best, prettiest, kindest being in the whole world" showing unconditional love towards bessie and only ever futhering this point by having Bessie coming to see her. Almost the modern equvalent of sunday lunch.

In conclusion bessie gives Jane the strength to live, love and eventully give create her own family.
