A Reader posted a review at 2012-04-04 02:27:02 for You've Been Warned.
(Language: English)
The first Patterson book I've read that deals with the trappings of the afterlife. An interesting take on a woman's private hell. A hell that she contributed to, and had multiple opportunities to change. Good read, but the Alex Cross series is better.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-12-14 02:35:07 for Hollywood (Ultimate Spider-Man (Sagebrush)).
(Language: English)
SPIDER-MAN, THE MOVIE is in production and Peter can't capitalise on the franchise because he has no official identity as Spider-Man. An actual fight with Dr. Octopus disrupts the filming. Spider-Man is kidnapped and taken to Brazil. He has to take a stow away flight to return to the USA or Peter Parker will be grounded. A very unusual and original story.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-11-19 11:59:36 for Revelation (Star Wars: Legacy of the Force, Book 8).
(Language: English)
Nearing the conclusion of the Lagacy of the Force Saga, this volume sees Bobba Fett reunited with the little family he has left. His wife is released from carbonite after a 30 year coma. Sworn enemies (Mandalorians and Jedi) are united in a common purpose: The elimination of Jacen Solo, who is now known as the Sith Lord, Darth Caedus. Great read. The 'Revelation' in question is the murder of Mara Jade Skywalker. Ben Skywalker (Luke's son) always knew that Jacen was responsible but not even his family would accept it. This book sees Ben's approach to showing them evidence instead of emotional rage based on revenge.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-09-20 08:19:37 for Spawn: Blood and Salvation.
(Language: English)
Future Spawn. The Earth is overun by the demons of Malbolgia's army. A handful of humans struggle to survive with only their wits and their faith. Great ironic monologue by the Devil at the end, where he admits that he is actually very lonely and wants to go home to heaven.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-09-20 08:17:11 for Spawn: Blood and Shadows.
(Language: English)
Everyone has filthy secrets. Silence causes eventual psychosis. Spawn appears to those who keep silent, to remind them of the reality of their filthy lives. One character's experience is clearly influenced by Ian Banks' THE WASP FACTORY. Great read. Scary, dark and raw.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-09-10 01:04:04 for The Wisdom of Father Brown.
(Language: English)
Second installment of The Father Brown Mysteries. This collection has lost a bit of what makes Father Brown lovable as a protagonist. It is as if he is 'showing off'. The scenes and mysteries themselves have become far more elaborate and interesting. Perhaps Brown's overt change in character is due to the secondary characters he is dealing with. Aristocracy and royalty need to get taken down a peg. Father Brown delivers

A Reader posted a review at 2011-08-23 07:02:56 for Private.
(Language: English)
Private investigation agency. Multiple cases including serial schoolgirl murders, NFL matchfixing, Mob involvement. Not as gritty as the Alex Cross series but very fast paced and interesting. Always pleasant when celebrity types are the victims. Definately worth a read

A Reader posted a review at 2011-08-17 08:52:43 for Blood of Angels.
(Language: English)
The conclusion of the STRAW MEN trilogy. Although, in itself it is an exciting book, it cannot beat the originality and intensity of the first book. Don't expect a happy ending. Great stuff, but the first book, on its own would have been enough. These authors, directors, musicians etc... always milking it for the yankee dollar. Bastards

A Reader posted a review at 2011-07-25 06:03:50 for Essential Spider-Man, Vol. 4 (Marvel Essentials) (v. 4).
(Language: English)
Vintage battles against Lizard, Kingpin, The Kangaroo, Mysterio and others. But what makes this book great is Peter Parker nearing the edge in his personal life and eventually deciding to reveal his identity secret to his closest friends. Amazing buil-up and focus on the psychologically broken hero.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-07-11 09:12:33 for The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare (Penguin Red Classics).
(Language: English)
One of the greatest works I have ever read. Timeless, despite being written 113 years ago. Social radicals, 'free thinkers',anarchists, conservatives and governers are all ridiculed and made to look as stupid and ignorant as each other. Every chapter is designed to confuse the reader further whilst ultimately making everything clearer in the overall narative. I have never encountered such a striking style of writing

A Reader posted a review at 2011-07-06 11:27:23 for The innocence of Father Brown.
(Language: English)
Short stories featuring the amature detective and Catholic priest, Father Brown. Brown's aproach to solving crimes differs from that of Sherlock Holmes or Poirot in the sense that it is based less on the process of elimination and more on the understanding of human psychology and inner turmoil. Often, Father Brown convinces the criminals in question to give themselves up as it is not the job of a priest to arrest. This has gratifying and sometimes unexpected results. It is the humility of the central character, and his overall mediocrity that make him the most unlikely of heroes.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-06-28 01:02:13 for Mary, Mary.
(Language: English)
Another interesting addition to the Alex Cross series. In this installment, a killer is targeting self-important Hollywood A-listers. Grizzly descriptive murders, as is standard with Patterson's work. No where near the best in theseries but well worth a look.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-06-22 01:26:29 for Love and Rockets: Human Diastrophism v. 4 (Love & Rockets 4): Human Diastrophism v. 4 (Love & Rockets 4).
(Language: English)
Very human and heartfelt. Set in Palomar, Central America. Realistic storyline and personal subject matter. Elements of political oppression limiting cultural expression. Lots of individual experiences come together to illustrate the journey of a community as a whole. A bit too much homosexuality towards the end.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-06-12 10:13:43 for Afterlight. Alex Scarrow.
(Language: English)
No more oil means no more power, no more modern comforts, no cars, no TV ... and no hope for mankind in its lazy technologically dependent state. 10 years after the 'oil crash' there are survivors. Some set up small societies with ideals from a simpler past (agricultural input from all who benifit etc.) However, others simply scavenge, take, rape, steal and kill. This book has 'Blockbuster Movie' written all over it.

A Reader posted a review at 2011-06-07 02:21:51 for Squadron Supreme TPB.
(Language: English)
Essential and historic sagas don't come bigger than this. BEFORE 'Watchmen', BEFORE 'Kingdom Come'. What happens when a group of super heroes embark on the creation of a global utopia? Ethically positive plan done through morally questionable methods. To say 'it goes tits up' is an understatement. exellent stuff

A Reader posted a review at 2011-05-05 04:23:11 for Essential Fantastic Four Volume 3 TPB: v. 3 (Essential (Marvel Comics)).
(Language: English)
Very amusing and consistent sexism throughout. "Stop being a wife for just one minute, and start being a hero!" Great fun.The wedding of Sue Storm & Reed Richards. The Galactus saga tha inspired the 2nd F4 film. Dr. Doom steals the Silver Surfer's board (and, therefore, cosmic power). An array of very dated (1963-5) heroes in the form of The Inhumans. Overall, great read |
A Reader posted a review at 2011-05-05 03:17:19 for Essential Spider-Man: v. 6 (Essential (Marvel Comics)).
(Language: English)
The death of Gwen Stacey. The subsequent early relationship between Parker & Mary-Jane. The death of the original Green Goblin. The 1st ever appearance of The Punisher. The marriage of Aunt May to Dr. Octopus. The "Spidey-Mobile".Further appearances by Sandman, Jackal, Human Torch and Molten Man. Truly captures the essence of the Web-Slinger in the 1970s

A Reader posted a review at 2011-03-22 02:26:57 for Nights of Villjamur (Legends of the Red Sun 1).
(Language: English)
This is truly awesome and reminds me most of the Iain M. Banks 'Culture' series. Yet it reads with the hystorical accuracy of a Massimo Manfredi novel. Political intrigue/corruption and dark violence converge in a captivating fantasy tale. 1st in the Legends of the Red Sun series, makes the reader salivate at the thought of what is in store as the series progresses

A Reader posted a review at 2011-03-14 02:53:57 for The Hitman: My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling.
(Language: English)
Arguably the greatest wrestling autobiography ever written. Brutally honest and eye opening. Who would have thought that our childhood hero was such a whoremonger. Tales of debauchery, addiction, despair, locker room politics and the constant pain, physical and emotional, that goes with part of THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH. 5 stars

A Reader posted a review at 2011-01-25 05:27:37 for Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D..
(Language: English)
Classic retro reprints of Fury tales. There is so much content in this collection. The 'secret agent' genre of this book differs greatly from its super hero counterparts. And numerous subtle insults towards James Bond make this a worthwhile addition to one's Marvel collection

A Reader posted a review at 2011-01-08 02:50:08 for Daredevil: Man Without Fear.
(Language: English)
The re-telling of the origins of Daredevil. Very dark and brutal story. Also features the making of the Kingpin and how he came to power. All set in Hell's Kitchen... Junkies, child prostitution and everything else that mad Matt Murdoch adopt the moniker of Daredevil. Well worth a read

A Reader posted a review at 2010-12-30 07:00:23 for Rising Stars Volume 1: Born in Fire: Born in Fire v. 1.
(Language: English)
The similarities to the origins of X-Men are apparent, but this is much more gritty and political. How a goverment deals with a pandemic of super beings that threatens the status quo is realistically horifying. Top Cow comics never does anything rubbish Hence, this is as good as expected

A Reader posted a review at 2010-12-09 02:25:11 for Punisher: Welcome Back, Frank (Marvel Premiere Classic).
(Language: English)
This book picks up where Punisher: Born left off. After realising that the sole reason for Frank Castle's murderous actions is the fact that he enjoys it, Castle does some more killing. What sets this book apart from other Punisher titles is the work of Garth Ennis (of Preacher fame) and the appearance of The Russian. Brilliant violent (yet comedic) gold
