I'd heard about this book for years, finally read it, and now I know what I'm up against if I want to write compelling epic fiction. This isn't a book of good and evil, nothing so simple. Often the good are not strong enough to survive as a vast kingdom tears itself apart and families betray each other in their bid for power. Sometimes this book was so gripping I was almost scared to read on, knowing something terrible was going to befall a character I'd grown attached to.
A brilliant read, I recommend it. Can't wait to read the rest.

There was a time that I thought Pratchett was losing it, that he just wasn't as funny anymore. This book changed that. Brilliantly funny from the start and giving us new and wonderful characters to fill the Discworld.

I'd never read Carey before this, and I was blown away. Great ideas carried off with incredible skill of prose. Inciteful and moving storytelling.

If you were ever going to get into the Malazan series this probably the book to start with. This has everything: battles, hunts, searches, the most incredible victories and the basest betrayals. It is worth reading for Felisin Paran's story. She is a rare character for fantasy, at turns tragic and at others contempible.

Essentially a 3rd entry point to the Malazan series, this covers the rise of an empire doomed to destroy itself, and gives literature a new figure of epic tragedy. Balancing this bleakness is the superb comedy double act of Tehol Beddict and his servant Bugg.

The first of the Malazan series that I read, I fell in love with this world, with its High Fantasy antics coupled with ordinary men and women dragged into the most calamitous of events.

Infinitely superior to the film, creating a superb adventure out of over a dozen works of the 19th Century.
