I liked this book, but I don't feel that I can recommend it to teenage girls. What happened to YA meaning that it was clean?

Well written with an interesting premise. Not quite a romance, but it's still good.

O.k it's definately for teenagers, but it is witty and fun to read. Best of all it is clean and I can recommend it to anyone. Janette Rallison has become a new favorite.

McKinley's latest fantasy is set in a somewhat Buffyesque world, only rather darker and more pessimistic. The vampires, demons, werebeasts, and other assorted supernatural nasties are more pervasive and openly recognized by everyone. About 15-20 years prior to the opening of the story (our heroine, Sunshine, was a child probably ten or a little older, and is now in her mid-twenties), the Voodoo Wars inflicted a major hit on both the human population and the human economy. In place of the FBI, we have the SOF, Special Other Forces, with the primary responsibility of holding the Others, but most importantly the vampires, in check.

And they're losing. The SOF and the world council to which they answer believe that the vampires currently control about 20% of the world's capital, and that within a century they'll have enough control that it will be, basically, all over; they'll be able to set up serious human ranching. I like this better than the twilight series. I just wish it didn't have the f-word and a little less graphic with sexual situations.

It is her second novel based on a fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm, this time based on Maid Maleen. When Dashti, a maid, and Lady Saren, her mistress, are shut in a tower for seven years for Saren’s refusal to marry a man she despises, the two prepare for a very long and dark imprisonment.

I just finished this book. Another favorite. I love her simple sweet stories. I like that they are clean books that young girls can enjoy. I liked the love, honor and devotion portrayed in this.

Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her love life: no real man can compare. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane’s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined.

I didn't like this book very much. I didn't like that the old women were basically going to an escort service to get a little romance in their dull lives. I think that Shannon can and has done way better than this.

Miri is a fourteen-year-old from Mt. Eskel who has never been allowed to work with the rest of the villagers (young and old, men and women) in the quarry that keeps the community alive. Because of this, she feels like an outcast in the community and feels cut off from the culture that is largely formed by their working life in the quarry. One day, a messenger from the king arrives along with the traders from the lowlands. The messenger announces that the nation's priests have informed the nation that the next princess will come from Mt. Eskell, despite the lack of education provided the villagers and despite the prejudice that exists between the mountain villagers and the lowlanders.
I think this is my favorite of Shannon Hale's books. I like the world she created and the strong personality of the main character.

This book is a mostly fictional story about the mountain people who live in the Ozarks of Missouri in the early 1900's and the mystery surrounding an old man called 'The Shepherd of the Hills,' who's real name is Dad Howitt.
I love this book because it reminds me of my grandfather who came from the Ozarks. He was the one who loaned me his book to read. It is a great story of redemption and forgiveness.

didn't like itit was okliked itloved itit was amazing
In pre-World War I Brooklyn, young Francie struggles to keep her idealism alive in the face of grinding poverty, the comedies and tragedies of ordinary life. Her mother, Katie, is a realistic woman who works as a janitor in their tenement to make ends meet. Her father, Johnny, is an alcoholic singing waiter who is more of a dreamer. Along with her brother Cornelius ("Neeley" for short), the four of them live in a poor apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City.

I just read this book a few months ago and I couldn't put it down. The characters are so real to me. The day to day life in Brooklyn is so interesting. The poverty is horrible, but they don't let it break them.

It is about two teenage Jewish boys who form a friendship, though they come from different worlds. This book is very well written. It is a fascinating look into Jewish history. Learning about the differences of each Jewish sect is so interesting. This book is also very moving with the friendship between the two boys.

A memoir of the experience of the author who returned to Iran during the revolution (1978-1981) and lived and taught in the Islamic Republic of Iran until her departure in 1997. I love the insights into literature and Iranian women. The part that discussed Jane Austen's books made me love them even more.

While working as the companion to a rich American woman vacationing on the French Riviera, she becomes involved with a wealthy Englishman, Max (Maxim) de Winter. After a week of courtship, she agrees to marry him, and after the marriage, accompanies him to his mansion, the beautiful Cornish estate, Manderley. Only upon their arrival at Manderley does the new bride realize how difficult it will be to lay to rest the memory of her husband's first wife, Rebecca.
I need to read this book again. I remember thinking it was sort of boring.

Mma Precious Ramotswe becomes a private detective, the first woman in Botswana to enter that profession, and opens an agency whose name indicates this unique situation. Motivated to help others and to make Botswana a better place, she encounters many dangerous and risky obstacles in the course of her investigations, but succeeds through using her intelligence, courage and instinct. Along with the plot developments, Mma Ramotswe provides observations upon the fine qualities of Botswana and Africa: the culture, traditions, and natural beauties found there, and the inhabitants' pride in their land.

These are great reads. The main character is interesting. I think the fact that they are set in Africa is the reason I like them. It gives a whole different perspective on life. They are also clean.

The story centers on seven year old Sarah Crewe who was raised in India by her affluent and adoring father, Captain Ralph Crewe, has been sent to London, England, to be educated at Miss Minchin's Seminary for Young Ladies. Miss Minchin is so impressed with Captain Crewe's wealth that she pets and spoils Sarah. When news comes that that Sarah's father has died and the fortune is gone Sarah's life changes drastically when she is forced to become a maid. I read this book a few years ago and I was surprised that I would like it. It is very sweet and I love the determination of the girl who still believed that she was a princess. Not because of the riches that she had, but because of her good heart and dignity.

didn't like itit was okliked itloved itit was amazing
Mary Lennox is a sickly, sour-faced little girl born in India to wealthy British parents. When an outbreak of cholera orphans her, she is sent to Misselthwaite Manor, an isolated country house in Yorkshire, England. There, she is left mostly to her own devices, by her father's brother-in-law, Archibald Craven, a widower still mourning his beautiful young wife, who has died ten years earlier. The only person who has any time for the little girl is the chambermaid Martha, who tells Mary about a walled garden that was the late Mrs. Craven's favourite. No one has entered the garden since she died because Archibald has locked its entrance and buried the key in an unknown location.
I've loved this book as a child and I still love it.

A Reader posted a review at 2008-10-08 09:38:23 for Hugo Victor : Les Miserables (Sc) (Signet classics). (Language: English)
didn't like itit was okliked itloved itit was amazing
Les Misérables contains a multitude of plots, but the thread that binds them together is the story of the ex-convict Jean Valjean who becomes a force for good in the world, but cannot escape his past. The novel is divided into five parts, each part divided into books, and subdivided into chapters. Each chapter is relatively short; usually no longer than a few pages. Nevertheless, the book in its entirety is quite lengthy by usual standards, well exceeding twelve hundred pages in unabridged editions. Within the borders of the novel's story arc, Hugo fills many pages with his thoughts on religion, politics, and society, including his three lengthy digressions, one being a discussion on enclosed religious orders, another being on argot, and most famously, his epic retelling of the Battle of Waterloo.

Hard to stay focused, but worth it for all the history and great characters. The unselfish love of the main character.

A Reader posted a review at 2008-10-08 09:28:51 for Secret Life Of Bees A Novel. (Language: English)
didn't like itit was okliked itloved itit was amazing
Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life is shaped by her blurred memory of the afternoon of her mother's accidental death. When Lily's black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three racists in town, they escape to Tiburon, South Carolina, a town that holds the secret to Lily's mother's past. Taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters, Lily is introduced to their mesmerizing world of bees and honey, is forced to confront her own dark past and learns what it means to be a family.

Not one of my favorites, but a good read. I love the relationship that the girl has with the black women. I love the info about bees. Good historical fiction.

The story begins with Garnet Cameron, an 18-year-old young woman from upper-class New York society. Garnet has just graduated from her finishing school and is trying to find a direction for her life now that her schooling is done. That summer, a young man by the name of Oliver Hale comes to New York. He is in town to buy supplies from the estate of Mr. Selkirk, a wealthy murdered man, to bring west with him. Oliver is a frontier trader from California and Garnet is immediately drawn to him. He treats her as an equal and talks to her as "a human being", telling her about the journey to the unknown territory of California. Garnet is riveted by Oliver's tales of adventure and excitement and longs to see the things he tells her about. Promising to take her west with him, Oliver proposes marriage and Garnet happily accepts. They are quickly married and begin their journey that March. The plan is that Garnet will travel to California with Oliver while he closes up his business out west and they both will return to New York the following year.

This is a great book. Adventure, romance, historical. Must read. Difficult to find though. It is an older book.
