This book was amazing. Ms. Freymann-Weyr creates a simply magnificent masterpiece of prose and thoughtfulness that touches on several current teen issues, including the question of sexuality. She does so in such a tasteful and eloquent way that I, as a teen, feel that she truly knows what she's talking about. This book isn't overly dramatic or shallow like the plethora of mediocre teen lit out there--it's simple and to the point, but also incredibly thought-provoking. Highly recommended to anybody who feels that they could handle the subject matter (which most could).

I absolutely agree with Trine; it was the cover of this book that first attracted my attention, much to my own shame. Fortunately, this book did not disappoint--far from it, actually. Ms. Bray creates a partially fantasy world set in Victorian England that's completely believable, meanwhile weaving in undertones of female empowerment and coming-of-age, albeit in a less-than-ordinary way. It (and its sequels) have become my favorite books. From start to finish, the story will keep you thoroughly engaged--sometimes, dramatic, sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, sometimes poetic and metaphoric, but always compelling. I highly recommend it!

(Language: English)
This play, as is common with Shakespeare, deteriorates greatly towards the end. His comedies are my favorites--don't give up on him if you haven't yet read "A Midsummer's Night Dream," or "The Taming of the Shrew," although I would recommend perusing through a copy that has explainations of some of the terminology--it makes the jokes easier to comprehend. This, however, is one of my least favorites. Romeo is a flop the entire way through. Juliet starts out as a decent character, with her wit and resourcefulness, but she soon transforms into a pathetic preteen. The character who was my favorite was actually Mercutio--he was so much more interesting. If you ever get the chance, I would actually recommending seeing the movie version "Romeo + Juliet" (produced in the late '90s, I believe) with Claire Danes. It's set in modern America, but they keep to the original script, and they actually do a decent job with it. Plus, Mercutio is amazing. All the other movies I've seen were worthless. All in all, hardly my favorite of the reknowned Shakespeare's plays. He's done better. |
