(Language: English)
Wonderful first novel and to think a guy wrote it! He's got one lucky wife! This a romp through the last few years of the '30's through the eyes of a 20-something single young woman in NYC. It is a book that sings to spirit of that city, and today, September 10, it was crystal clear to me that it is the spirit that makes NYC what it is. I highly recommend this book.

Verghese takes us into the world of medicine, this time in Ethiopia during the historical period just prior to, during and after the reign of Haile Selassie. This is a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the members of one medical family at "Missing" Hospital in Addis Ababa. Verghese skillfully takes one character to America and illuminates the contrasts between a developing medical community and the advanced medicine of Boston and New York. This is a must read for great plotting, unforgettable characters and fascinating settings.

(Language: English)
The story of a small town in Massachusetts from founding to present day. Typical of Hoffman, there is no plot that I can find unless we consider on rather unusual love affair symbolized by the Red Garden to be the plot. Interesting but not exciting. A different bent on historical fiction- it focusses on one small piece of history and puts it under a microscope. Not my favorite book but if you like Hoffman, you will most likely not be disappointed.

(Language: English)
Interesting take on the legal rights of gay couples. Well written and suspenseful Picoult takes you through the controversies focussing on the religious intolerance that seems to be supportive of gay-bashing. Timely and worth reading but not a relaxing read at all. Serious business disguised in fiction. I like it. The characters are all sympathetic and everyone will recognize somebody if not everybody in this novel. I have not finished it but trust me...I will. I can't believe I took out time from reading to write this review.

Another adventure/historical fiction piece which follows the history of one small, illuminated Haggadah from its creation to its final resting place in a museum. Fascinating insight into the historical relationships among religions in the Near East. Another highly recommend for readability, interesting subject matter and suspense.

(Language: English)
I am going out to a book club discussion on this one now. It is a fascinating read-the type of historical fiction that will not easily be put down and once read it will stay with you forever. I highly recommend this novel about the journeys of one slave woman from her childhood in an African village to her final days in London. You will find yourself time traveling through the voyage to the antebellum south, to loyalist Nova Scotia, back to Liberia and on to London. Astonishing in its scope and mesmerizing in its style

(Language: English)
Vicki insisted I read this so I came home Friday, downloaded it to my Kindle and I just finished it. This is defnitely a "keep on the bookshelf" book so I am ordering it for Len for Christams. Randy Pausch epitomizes the "open" mindset described by Carol Zweck. I loved this book and will read it again and again and again.

I loved this book. The characters still linger in my daydreams from time to time. Franzen's depiction of perfectly ordinary folks sorting through the minefields of emotion and intellect in search of serenity and "maturity" is a stunning portait of the extraordinary that takes place within what sometimes seems to be a very ordinary family. It's a great read about family, life and the sometimes elusive chains that bind us. I reccomend it toa nyone who wonders "WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT"...
