The language is (as always) beautiful, but the characters never meet your expectations. Romeo is not all he's cracked up to be, Juliet is just too susceptible, and they are both suicidal previous to the tragic ending. The only character I liked was Friar Lawrence. At least he had his head screwed on right.
There's you-know-what innuendo and a couple oaths.
At the end, even though everything is overdone, the emotion is pretty well played out, and in a weird way it was my favorite part-- but still too discombobulated how the Capulet/Montague feud ends.
Overall, one word sums it: disappointing

This story has a Robert Louis Stevenson feel. A fourteen year old boy is the generally smart, but still naive hero and there are villains, colorful common-folk, and lovable rogues aplenty.
Iain Lawrence is one of the few authors whose who's style has a modern edge, but still remains true to the setting and time period.
Adventure, suspense, unforgettable characters, and even a little humor, it's a thoroughly enjoyable ride.

NOTE: This is the second book of a trilogy, and although the others are okay, this one's the best.

didn't like itit was okliked itloved itit was amazing
An autobiography/biography of a woman who put her faith solely in God and let Him lead. She traveled to China with no support and ten dollars in her pocket. God provided and also brought many opportunities for her to witness where few to none had before. Her life is a beautiful picture of a believer striving to trust and serve God and of the Lord's grace and provision.

Quirky humor, crazy characters, fun story line, a little mystery. . . throw 'em together and what do they make? A book that's pure entertainment and way fun to read!

I started reading this, but got too bogged down by the wordy, over descriptive first chapter. After a few months I picked it up again.
A word of advice: Endure! It took a few days to finish, but it was worth it
The setting is an English village with its share of social distinction, political disagreements, and residents with well kept secrets. Even though it begins with one main character (a sketch of her character/personality and also the life changing decision she makes), eventually the story pans out to include six more characters, each strong and well rounded (after a while I began to love the author's in-depth character sketches which were, at times, charming). The minor characters are also solid and well developed.
The characters control the story; their words, choices, and actions not just affecting their own lives but the lives of those around them.

It's hard to write a review for a book with such an ugly cover (luckily there are other editions out there). But, in this case at least, "Don't judge a book by it's cover" rings true.

Told in excerpts from diaries, letters, conversations, school memos, etc. with virtually no character or setting description, this documentary novel is written with such skill you won't fail to be entertained and the main point hits home.

"Two Questions:

Do you swear to tell the truth, whole truth, and nothing but the truth?

Does anybody say no?"

Simply, but beautifully written, this true story is one of my favorites. Even though it's a quick read, the pictures it painted stuck with me for a long time.

Positive Elements: Fascinating plot; well rounded characters; beautiful language; interesting insights and portrayals of human nature.

Negative Elements: Swearing by Christ's wounds which was the most offensive and most frequently used; a few innuendoes and references, some of which I probably would have overlooked if it hadn't been for the detailed notes.

Overall: I was disappointed by some of the content, but it's a deep read and one I really loved.
