A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-08 07:27:11 for Romeo and Juliet.
(Language: English)
I love the language of this play. I mean, Romeo could just say "Hey you're hot, let's get together." But since it's Shakespeare, we get "What light through yonder window breaks? It is the east! and Juliet is the sun. Rise fair sun and kill the envious moon, who is sick and pale with grief that thou her maid art far more fair than she". I could read the balcony scene over and over again. Also, I really love that he leaves most readers on the edge of their seats at the end.. will the friar make it in time?? Will Juliet wake up before Romeo offs himself? And really, it's incredible that Shakespeare pulls this suspense off, espcially since he tells us right at the beginning that they die!

Strange and creepy.... it has cannibals!

(Language: English)
Ray Bradbury paints a scary portrait of the future.... this is the story of a fireman (in the future, obviously) who's job is not to PUT OUT fires, but to START THEM. All books and other forms of literature have been banned. Break this law and the firemen show up and burn your house down. It might be anti-government propoganda, but it's a must-read!

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-07 02:26:13 for The Crucible.
(Language: English)
This is one of my favorite plays. I saw a high school production of The Crucible that was so incredible..I went back and saw it again. You can take everything from a man except his name.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-07 02:14:54 for The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.
(Language: English)
Compared to some of his other novels, this is King-light. The heroine of the story is a little girl who is brave and courageous beyond belief... This is my favorite Stephen King book.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-07 02:11:05 for Black Creek Crossing: A Novel.
(Language: English)
Fairly creepy...not quite Stephen King, but I wouldn't recommend reading it at night when you're alone...

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-03 06:32:43 for Crime and Punishment A Novel in Six Parts With Epilogue.
(Language: English)
I know this is a classic but it was boring as hell! I mean, come on, at the time Dostoevsky wrote this, it was not all at once..it wasn't even published as one complete novel! He sent it in pieces to a magazine or newspaper publisher, and he was paid BY THE WORD! It's long and drawn out and I had no interest in finishing it.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-03 06:28:03 for Tess of the D'Urbervilles.
(Language: English)
Heartbreaking story. Tess is one of the most tragic female characters ever written...a match to Shakespeare's Hamlet. The pace slows down a bit in the middle, but don't skip the ending!

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-03 06:24:34 for Jules Verne Collection.
(Language: English)
Actually I only read some of his short stories... This guy is weird! He writes about the most obscure places and the most meaningless events... Maybe I'm not seeing the bigger picture, but I don't think I'll be reading any further...

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-03 06:20:22 for The City of falling angels.
(Language: English)
The basis of the story is interesting, and the location is one that appeals to all varieties of readers... However Berendt's style of writing left me a bit unsatisfied. I was just never hooked, and I had a hard time getting through it.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-06-03 06:12:21 for Ishmael.
(Language: English)
This book was fan-tastic! It was funny, insightful, and I really liked the dialogue. This book brings up the argument of science vs. religion over and over again...I personally love the challenge. I stopped...thought about it...reconciled the two...and continued.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-05-14 10:53:38 for Hamlet.

One of the most quoted stories of all time. This story is the very definition of "tragedy"...almost EVERYONE dies at the end!

A Reader posted a review at 2009-05-07 11:09:40 for Ethan Frome.
(Language: English)
Ethan's story is comparable to a Shakespearean tradgedy...oh, the irony!

Read the book...DO NOT see the movie. it's a total disappointment. The second book of the Vampire Chronicles told through Lestat's perspective.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-05-07 11:02:53 for The Vampire Lestat: Ballentine Books Edition (Vampire Chronicles).
(Language: English)
Lestat truely is the "Brat Prince"...he is by far one of the most intriguing/complex/charismatic characters ever written. I'm more than a little bit in love with him

"War...huh! yeah!...What is it good for? Absolutely nothin!" As far as war stories go this one is pretty epic. And as a major bonus, you get Achilles vs Hector in a badass battle royale.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-05-06 09:44:03 for John Donne: The Reformed Soul: A Biography.
(Language: English)
I love John Stubbs' style of writing. The story of Donne's life (and the inspiration behind his poetry) is very interesting. I couldn't put it down!I'm not quite halfway through, but I'm entranced. |
