An old favorite, always comforting. Ms. L'Engle is one of the few authors I really wish I'd had a chance to meet and get to know while she was alive.

You know those annoying "part of my next novel" things that Hamilton sells as "novellas" and puts in short anthologies to keep fans happy between books? This should have been one of them. Not only that, it should have been filed strictly in the soft-core erotica section, rather than anywhere in a bookstore populated by readers seeking more of a plot. I realize that's been said about many of the Anita Blake books, but this one takes the cake. I won't give you any spoilers regarding the supposed plot, but 90% of the book is spent in getting to the location where action is supposed to happen, describing what Anita and Micah are wearing, their hotel suite, etc., and in bed in said suite. Plot, oh, what? I truly think she wrote the sex scenes/relationship angst, then added a little obligatory stab at a plot at the beginning and end. That's it! Not such bad writing if you expect what you get, but don't pick this thin thing up expecting a novel! (And, um, is anybody selling really keen bookcovers? Carrying these in public is increasingly embarrassing!) |

Why can't we give zero ratings? Or even negative numbers? Because believe me, this book deserves far less than a one!Yes, I know it's her first published book. It doesn't just read like the notes from an RPG campaign (hello, background here? a little universe information, Ms. Hamilton?). It reads like the badly-kept, disjointed notes of a really horrid campaign that has just one PC. If I were Ms. Hamilton, I'd make a concerted effort to find and destroy every last copy of this book. |
