(Language: English)
Funny, down to earth, firm as heck, but really loving and empowers parents to be truly good parents who have the confidence to guide their children to adulthood. If you don't teach your kids the essentials then Dr. Ray points out that others will have to do it later in life. These others may include: boss, judge, spouse etc.

(Language: English)
Excellent book. Not religious at all, very practical; seems to work for any faith base as long as the person reading it has some sense of the existence of absolute truth. Not much room for moral relativism here.

(Language: English)
I am terribly divided amongst myselves on this book. I want tofeel healthily challenged by Aslett's suggestions and I do, yet I am very irritated by him. He does in in his book that if you follow his recipe for having a 48 hour day people will often hate you and call you names like "workaholic".He does have good ideas though.

It is good, but right now I want the truth and mythology is just not satisfying. Liking it so far. The God's seem to be missing.... |

I have to agree that it is all mostly harmless. I am sure I learned something, but I can't bring myself to re-read any of them. I do have memories of some pleasingly silly passages.

A Reader posted a review at 2008-05-24 09:47:48 for Da Vinci Code.
(Language: English)
Boring thriller type mystery. The only reason I finished it was I wanted to see how awful it got and why it was being blamed for shaking the faith of Catholics or the reputation of Opus Dei.

Excellent book for ages. Ranks up there with the Little Prince. Roald I vividly remember reading the description of Charlie eating the chocolate bar.

(Language: English)
I was surprised how sane the book is. The author does not dwell on the blood and gore. He paints vivid pictures of his life which help me see what life can be like in North Eastern Africa. I liked learning about rural and urban living. I appreciated the humble way in which he tells about his time as a soldier. He doesn't seem to blame others for his decision to join. It seems to me he took responsibility for that choice. Of course once he joined it was almost impossible for him to quit on his own.

Made my heart beat a bit fast. luckily, in the end I realized it is aimed at those who are trying to cheat. Also it just goes to prove the point that everyone is writing books these days...even people who just shouldn't.

(Language: English)
Very entertaining and vividly written. I wish I could write like that. I would never watch the movie though, I am sure they made it absolutely disgusting. I loved the fascination the main chaarcter had with smells and the descriptions of perfume making.

A Reader posted a review at 2008-04-25 06:45:20 for The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town.
(Language: English)
Sort of dry and depressing. But it certainly provided motivation today to not let my most self-willed child get away with not being able control her moods and impulses. I don't want her to turn into a mess like the main character who wasn't disciplined as a child. Well that seems to be the best of Grisham's main theme so far in the book.

I love all Christie novels and stories. She is my literary warm blankie. Yes there are much better writers, much better observers, pithier plots, you name it, but I just really like her voice.

Along with an etymology dictionary Very helpful in determining if there is ANY possible explanation for the way a word is spelled in English. There are not that many exceptions, but they are a nuisance when they appear. But the bottom line is: SOME WORDS ARE JUST SPELLED THAT WAY....PUNCTUM

A Reader posted a review at 2008-04-22 09:43:37 for A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning.
(Language: English)
A thoughtful book, introducing Charlotte Mason in a way that exemplifies Charlotte Mason's teaching methodology. The ideas are presented, not as doctrine or well thought out thesis, but in a way that forces one to question one's own attitudes. It leaves the reader the freedom he needs to continue an internal dialogue. It is not an authoritative dissertation, more of a walk through your own thoughts and attitudes using Charlotte Mason as a Companion. A reviewer on Amazon found fault with the musing style of the book. The reviewer wanted concrete theory, system and methodology. However, the purpose of the book is not to present either of those. The purpose is to help come to our own conclusions given some very valid guidance. Another critic, who critiques Charlotte Mason herself for being Anglican and Anti Catholic would urge all Catholics to avoid flirtation with such heretical material. I disagree, but don't have more room to expound here.

very funny sarcastic commentary on "high society" in 1800's. I am not sure if it is edifying or not, but it is very entertaining. The language is very good.

A Reader posted a review at 2007-12-22 02:17:21 for The Laurel's Kitchen Bread Book: A Guide to Whole-Grain Breadmaking.
(Language: English)
Great descriptions of how to make whole wheat bread products. My only problem is that I have to learn to apply everything she writes about to two additional complicating factors aside from whole grain: I want to use 100% natural starter for the rising agent and I would like to soak the flour of my baked goods to access maxium nutritional value. These things change the texture and handling of the dough enough to cause a beginner baker problems. The reason for the four starts is mainly because I do not like that she does not describe the simplest of all starters that uses only flour and water. Also she should really not have to use manufactured yeast if she has natural wild yeast starter in her sourdough bread. |
A Reader posted a review at 2007-12-22 02:07:21 for Tellers of tales; children's books and their authors from 1880 to 1968;: With a chronological table of famous children's books to the present day, and lists of titles by each author.
(Language: English)
The author loves a good tale and he has some definite well thought out ideas on what sorts of tales are good for children. He does agree that there can and should be morals and a point to stories, but he is a great advocate of the world of the imagination and ridicules efforts to sermonize at children in an obvious and tiresome way. He writes of "insipid verses, dull cautionary tales and heavily laden stores of knowledge and unnatural behaviour". Each chapter in this book is a gem and Mr. Green draws the reader into the world of the writer or group of writers he wishes to share. We learn of their lives, Their interests and most of their stories, it is definitely not a dry pedantic read. |
A Reader posted a review at 2007-12-22 01:56:35 for A Passage to India.
(Language: English)
I am enjoying this book, though I had to put it down for a while because Forster is too good at describing the characters. I was feeling and smelling all that was meant to be felt and smelled. Because of my own "whiteness" I grew impatient with the pace and ways of the Indians and also pitied them for the absolute arrogance of the Anglo-Indians. Forster is successful in intimating the inevitable and perpertual incompatability between East and West. Forster speaks of the eagerness of a few Indians to befriend the ruling Anglos, but those efforts are thwarted by the narrow middle-class self-absorbed English mind of one main characte, while welcomed eagerly by another Anglo who is well educated, interested in others etc. Forster also points out uncomfortable subtle weaknesses of our human nature. Such as the inability of the human soul to dwell too long on sadness and misfortune that do not impact our own lives directly. The main line of the story is basically that a middle-class anglo woman, who came to marry an Anglo government official, mistakenly accused an Indian doctor of attacking her. The story sets the scene, describes the characaters involved before and aftert the incident. All this is done at leisure with great attention to detail. |
