As a kid, my Grandmother, a retired school teacher, would typically gift me with three books a year, (Christmas, Easter, and my Birthday.)They were always Dr. Seuss books, and this was the first. I still have it, dog eared, and smoke damaged, (from a house fire when I was in 2nd grade.) And so, I was at a very early age, introduced to a very particular form of surrealism... And I continue to live in that world whenever possible. |

(Language: English)
I think Lear is the metaphorical train wreck of Shakespeares work. It's set up in the beginning to be sort of humorously melancholy, and it just spirals downward from there. And that's the thing, you just watch in fascination as this old man's world comes crumbling in around him, everyone he holds dear either betrays him or dies, and the body count just keeps tacking on zeros. So, yeah...Lust, revenge, and blood. Yay blood! |

(Language: English)
When it comes to Shakespeare's tragedies, this is a close tie with Macbeth, (I'm all about the Blood. Revenge, Lust, and Blood. To quote Stoppard's Player, the blood is essential!)That, and I AM a Fishmonger... I think Hamlet is Shakespeares masterpiece of sorts in terms of writing. The play within the play, and a hero who really doesn't want to be one. The complexity of the plot and the nuances of language are just amazing. But like ALL Shakespeare, I really prefer to experience it in the way it was meant to be: Performed live. |

I find that I have difficulty going back and reading Douglas Adams now. I just don't find him as clever as I used to.Still, this was certainly a huge influence on my teenage years, and Doug's work still manages to manifest itself in everything I do in some way. A brilliant blend of good science, nonsensical technobabble, and incredibly dry humor and satire. I cried the day Douglas passed on, and he will always hold an important place in my heart and on my bookshelf. |
