OMG this was like reading an autobiography! I loved how Radish brought humour into these very strong & raw emotional battles between the sisters. I wonder if I dare put it in our Family Reunion Book Exchange!?

I could not put this one down. I liked how all the different threads connected and I am so darned curious about his Salander character that I'm going out to buy the next in this series. What a shame that Larsson is gone.

I am so excited to find another writer that I enjoy and she has written quite a few books. I actually pulled this one out of the 'recently read' shelf at the library. Her writing is intelligent and entertaining. I am now going to start with the first in her Brunnetti mysteries....

it hurt to read through this; not because the words were difficult to read but because the emotional pain was naked and so pure

A Reader posted a review at 2010-01-14 08:52:17 for An Equal Music: A Novel.
(Language: English)
a wonderful read. I love the way Seth brings the instruments to life, brings the passion and curse of music to life, and the characters are real - faults and all. Perhaps I loved the book because I love music; however, it was Seth's writing that kept me reading. This is one of those books where you find yourself skimming to see what is going to happen but because the words are put together so beautifully you stop yourself - go back - and savour the way Seth has put them on paper.

a struggle for self identity, independence, and freedom. Ali's writing is emotional driven and helps one to not only understand the culture/religion but to also feel the constraints and struggles of each person. I'm going to read another of her novels.

So well written that I could not put it down and kept reading faster and faster such that I know I will read it again to discover what I missed as well as to appreciate the intricate beauty of Verghese's words.Page 286: Gosh sighed. "I hope one day you see this as clearly as I did in Kerchele. The key to your happiness is to own your slippers, own who you are, own how you look, own your family, own the talents you have, and own the ones you don't. If you keep saying your slippers aren't yours, then you'll die searching, you'll die bitter, always feeling you were promised more. Not only our actions, but also our omissions, become our destiny." |

A very disturbing subject makes for a disturbing read but a MUST read. Understanding the journey of this amazing woman is given to us with beauty, humour, sensitivity, & honesty. Dementia is feared and misunderstood. This book will open your mind and your heart!~ I couldn't put it down once started. ~ I found myself fearfully comparing my short-term memory lapses with Lydia's. ~ I felt that I was given a glimpse into how families of Alzheimer patients live with wondering if they will be afflicted. ~ I was left deeply affected & unable to read anything else for several days & my family doesn't even have a history of this! Today I put this subject away with gentleness and move on to lighter stories. |

(Language: English)
This is a must read. I experienced a full gamut of emotions and was crying by the end of the novel, however the most difficult emotion was the anger I felt with respect to the issues faced by women under the Taliban rule. I wondered why men are so afraid of women such that they have to dismiss them like this. I find myself 'ignorant' and in need of educating myself - esp about the current issues and what can be done to help.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-01-15 09:40:27 for What Is the What.
(Language: English)
This is a story of human potential - both extremes unfortunately. Eggers gives a voice to Deng's life in such a way that moves the reader to wonder how humankind can be so cruel and at the other end of the spectrum how this man retains hope even in the most devastating of circumstances. I had a rough time with the subject matter because I know (most of)it to be a true account of what is happening in Africa and other regions of the world. Both disturbingly inspiring and thought-provoking.

I have to give this 5 stars because I just couldn't put it down and I went thru the whole gamut of emotions. I was actually "slobber" crying near the end of it. Brashares takes a silly idea and builds a lot of serious life events around it....I definitely need to read more of this author!
