Here's another book I plan to lend to my brainy friend who wants to be a profiler! There is some interesting information which had me suspecting a certain diagnosis for Lizzie.

(Language: English)
As a mental health professional myself, I appreciated the content. It's a fascinating look into the thinking process of doctors as they work their way through the process of making a diagnosis. This book may save many lives if it educates patients on how to work with a diagnostician to identify their medical problems!

It was a lot cooler when I first read it at age sixteen. I was glad to finish it this time.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-05-24 10:45:29 for My Sense of Silence: Memoirs of a Childhood with Deafness.
(Language: English)
This book was written by a hearing CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), and details his very grim childhood with deaf parents who focused on survival, with no understanding of the emotional needs of a very defenseless little boy. Although he achieved academic success and worked hard to make a life in the hearing world and leaving the reality of his deaf parents behind, he eventually found himself needing to confront his personal demons and put the pain to rest. I would recommend the book to anyone who wanted to develop a deeper sensitivity to the experience of those who have deaf family members.

I was skeptical about the way the interpreter and sign language issues would be integrated into the story line, but I was pleasantly surprised. The writer managed to tell the story in a very believable way.

A completely escapist and pleasant glimpse into another way of life. The story is simple, and the text written as if it was being told by someone from Africa. Very enjoyable!

(Language: English)
Here is a woman's story, told about living the rugged pioneering life at the southernmost place on earth. While performing the work of sole physician at her station, she faced the personal life crisis of a breast cancer diagnosis. Though isolated physically from a rescue to better medical care, the author and her colleagues managed to treat her condition using supplies air-dropped to them in the middle of the bitterest cold on the planet. Here is just one more testimony of a human's ability to survive when facing extreme challenges.

(Language: English)
This was a fascinating, though saddening, report on the legal practices in Ada, Oklahoma, a serious indictment of the dangers of small-town justice. I truly hope this has changed. I could NOT put this book down! |
