(Language: English)
The Beetle A MysterySara has reviewed this book on weRead. One of the strangest books I have read yet. But I will say I rather enjoyed it. It was written along side the famous Dracula and in that time actually outsold it. It's relation to Gothic undertones certainly is apparent. The main gist is about an Egyptian Goddess (child...ren of Isis) taking the form of a beetle against English society in the shape of a few men and one female. It's about patriarchy's and stereotyping of 18th century. Only, it takes the dark side of these things and mirrors it against the normalized side of it in English historical hierarchy. It takes masculine dominance and twists it into an undefinable mess. It takes gender rules and strips them. True to that time-frame in England, it tackles 'the return of the repressed'. I actually loved the old horror feel. |

I can see why this is a culturally treasured book. I will say the vernacular made it a slow book to read for me as accented writing usually does, and that was frustrating. But the fact that it ensues itself so fully to culture is also a feat in itself for Hurston. The story itself was strong and the strengths Janie showed were great. It was good to see growth over a lifetime and finally finding herself, and finally finding love. It signifies a feeling of blues and the narrative has poetic undertones. It shows traditions, rituals and what a African American woman may had to experience at that time in the South post slavery. It feels like a looking glass, to see back in time.

A Reader posted a review at 2010-09-17 02:35:50 for by Charlaine Harris (Author)Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries, No. 1).

Fun book, a bit raunchy in some areas, but not in terrible ways; more like sexual dirtiness trailing throughout. But it is about a vampire vs. wholesome goodness. I enjoyed it!

This whole series was great! Very easy to get sucked into, plus the Gothic like undertones added a bit darkness to them, which i found exciting.

These rhymes, poems and artwork are just as enjoyable to my kids as they were to me growing up. I can't say how many times we laugh out loud together while reading something silly of his. He has a rare talent, his writing encompassing that childlike enjoyment, wonder or just ridiculousness.

A Reader posted a review at 2010-09-17 02:29:17 for Robert Frost's Poems.
(Language: English)
Robert Frost always leaves me in a good mood or pondering life in its strange ways. Always worth reading his work. I love how he uses nature as a catalyst in describing human emotion in many of his works. Perfection.

A Reader posted a review at 2010-09-17 02:24:24 for Alias Grace: A Novel.
(Language: English)
The author has a very unique way of piecing together the story and leaving the reader questioning important pitfalls in society of that time: between men and women, hierarchy, rich and poor, the physiological and psychological body, and stripping down human nature in general. I thought it was very thought provoking.

This is a good book to learn the technical side of poetry. He made somewhat tricky concepts easy to understand.

Much different then the vampires in love with humans. More so the writing is much more complex and a little harder to grasp onto. But it was a fresh concept and she did a good job getting me to love the characters like her other books. But I have to say I wasn't thrilled with the ending as I was left feeling slightly disconnected from the characters we came to know so well through out it. Over all though I am glad I read it.

Rich with history and the moods around that time in the depression. But even more so eye opening is how animals and people were treated and how it came to fall and in turn change the way the we know it now. It is much like a circus in the characters life as well... not just the animals. A little love story thrown in there and how a different perspective in life as we age. There is much history that I didn't even realize was so fierce. She has a raw way of making you really feel as though you are there.

Everyone should read through this book... Whether you are artistic, creative or not. It's an amazing life changing book if you really take the time to look into yourself and search for your own answers. This book gives you the tools to do so. Awesome.

I wasn't sure about reading this book at first, but wow William P Young's details are absolutely mind blowing to me... Such deep intricate thought. All life's little wonders and questions put beautifully to understand in a graceful way. The way he puts God out in a different light is really neat (caught me off guard)and much more along the lines of something I can grasp onto in my own beliefs. He takes it away from "religion" and into the heart of a real human, that is refreshing.

A Reader posted a review at 2009-01-13 08:13:32 for A Great and Terrible Beauty (The Gemma Doyle Trilogy).
(Language: English)
Great book, pretty dark and Gothic but full of vibrant descripsions of India and the Victorian Era and the things unseen. While it had me kinda freaked out at some points, it was still very fairytale like. I loved it and got the second two to the serious right away.

As simple as this series it, it just grabs you and I couldn't put it down. What's even more impressive is that these were Stephanie Meyers first books. She is something else!
