just re-read-- how does marquez manage to balance so many voices, energies, feelings, and desires-- and not lose the reader?"...in that flash of lucidity he became aware that he was unable to bear in his soul the crushing weight of so much past. wounded by the fatal lances of his own nostalgia and that of others, he admired the persistence of the spiderwebs on the dead rose bushes, the perseverance of the rye grass, the patience of the air in the radiant February dawn."

my favorite piece to teach!! i love hamlet's complexity and temperament-- his intelligence, emotional vulnerability, drive for justice, and struggle to avoid becoming that which he despises most (which of course, he must if he is to revenge the death of his father). "Seems, madam! nay it is; I know not 'seems.' 'Tis not alone my inky cloak, good mother, Nor customary suits of solemn black, Nor windy suspiration of forced breath, No, nor the fruitful river in the eye, Nor the dejected 'havior of the visage, Together with all forms, moods, shapes of grief, That can denote me truly: these indeed seem, For they are actions that a man might play: But I have that within which passeth show; These but the trappings and the suits of woe."

(Language: English)
brilliant novel that captures the tortured narratives of five characters seeking any form of human connectedness amidst utter destruction. "He feels everything is missing from his body, feels he contains smoke. All that is alive is the knowledge of future desire and want. What he would say he cannot say to this woman whose openness is like a wound, whose youth is not mortal yet. . . How does this happen? To fall in love and be disassembled."
