What can I say about a book that can evoke both clarity and confusion all at once? I believe the word is...Masterpiece. A true existential masterpiece. It's a tough read. You have to learn to trust Gardner. You don't have to understand... everything, you need to continue on the journey. Then, somewhere along, you realize that it is this trust in the absurd that pulls you, the reader, into the plot. Some may balk at the lack of a clear end. I think that endings are rarely written so clearly.

While I enjoyed this book, I found all the civil war reenactment info boring. I only mildly cared about the characters. BUT, it kept my attention and it is an Elmore Leonard book. He\'s a master.
