The first Mary Stewart book I read. I got it from the Scholastic book club back in the 70s. I can still remember most of the book which tells you that it had an impact on me. A good kids fantasy book.

A reader posted a review at for Lest We Forget the Parish of Canisbay.
(Language: English)
This book is a homage to the parish of Canisbay in the north of Scotland. It looks back at the past several hundred years, but mainly focusses on the memories of the elder generation of people and times that they grew up with. It's an amazing glimpse of life in the last century. It's very readable - many are short tales and memories. The book includes pictures from almost a century. Spot me in a couple of the photos :-)

A reader posted a review at for Magnus by George Mackay Brown (The Scottish Collection).
(Language: English)
One of my favourite books. Magnus is, in himself, a fascinating historical character. He was a viking turned bishop. A man of peace who had to take part in viking raids. Like Neil Gunn, George Mackay Brown could take a simple story and hide layers in it. In this book in one part of the book he sets the characters in more modern eras which really challenges your views of interpreting historical figures.

A classic novel. Includes many of the mythical elements of the north of Scotland such as rowan trees, salmon of wisdom etc. The story is very simple but it really shows the authors skills to describe a fishing village and create many layers to the story.

I read this one when I was 17 and wondered why on earth I hadn't read it years before. It opened up a world of fantasy books to me and has been the standard by which many fantasy books are judged even today. I would encourage teenagers and everyone older to read this one.

I really enjoyed this stand alone book by the author of the Twilight series. I'm not normally a fan of "end of humanity/apocalypse" type books but this one is really thoughtful and provoking. An alien species takes over humans and only a few survivors are left. This book describes what happens when one of the more unusual aliens inhabits a human who loved one of the fellow survivors.

I thought this was a really good conclusion to the series (turns out she has actually planned more). I read some online reviews that didn't like this one, but I did. I think it takes the story so far and brings it to the next inevitable step.

(Language: English)
A great third book in the series - vampire vs werewolves. I like her take on the history of the two 'species'.
