A handful of good stories. Most of them are decidedly meh.

We listened to the audiobook during our drive through New Zealand. It's a bit depressing at times, but a good book overall.

(Language: English)
It wasn't so much a crime novel as a look at the somewhat neurotic side of Italy that most people don't know about (we're talking about the normal people of Italy, not the serial killers). It was an interesting cultural perspective, but not sure it was worth it.

It's a novel written in the form of short poems. You think her life is tough, but partway through the author throws you a doozy that I *still* haven't gotten over. It makes me speechless every time I read it.

Great book, hilariously imaginative. I love the illustrations too. I can't wait to read it to my kids.

Alicia posted a review at 2009-03-28 05:34:55 for Belgariad Omnibus: Castle of Wizardry / Enchanters' End Game 2.
(Language: English)
The plot is pretty standard fantasy epic stuff, but the characters are great, and the writing is great, which is what makes it one of my favorites. It's a tried and true recipe, but it's all in the details.

Spent half an hour ranting after I read this book about how lousy it was. I am trying to read through all the Newbery Medal books because I love so many of them, but this is definitely one of the worst. Lousy plot, lousy character development. ***** WARNING: PLOT SPOILERS ***** The story was kinda sorta going somewhere, but then poof, everybody dies. Does our protagonist actually learn anything?? Avi did it much better with "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle." I recommend you go read that instead. |

I thought it was amazing. Liked the characters, and it poses some difficult ethical questions in the form a well-told narrative.

Didn't think it would be as riveting as it was, but I read most of it in one sitting. Piercing. Wonder if it is still true...

It was exciting and well-written. Wouldn't hurt the average American to read more books like this--expand your horizons, know what you're talking about when you start ranting about the Middle East.

Thought it was very interesting, though maybe not revolutionary.

Alicia posted a review at 2009-03-24 06:48:57 for Da Vinci Code.

The religious history behind this book I found very interesting. The book itself (plot, characters, writing) was pretty much throwaway. It has practically the same plot as Angels and Demons -_-;If you want to come discuss the implications behind Christ having a bloodline, on the other hand, I could speculate about that all day. =) |
Alicia posted a review at 2009-03-24 06:42:24 for Breaking Dawn.
(Language: English)
I thought that she was pushing it a little with the plot in this book, but still relatively enjoyable. Partway through I almost gave up because I thought it was too ridiculous a premise, but I kept going. The writing is still enjoyable, even if everything seems to work out a little *too* well all the time. The whole "we're all going to die, everything is bad, oh wait, everything is actually wonderful" is worse in this book than the rest, I thought. She spends too much time freaking out, and too much stuff works out magically in the end.

Not a lot of literary value, but fun and funny to read.

Alicia posted a review at 2009-03-24 06:27:13 for The Dream of the Stone.
(Language: English)
Blech. I've read a lot of fantasy and this one did not impress. It was too predictable in some ways (central romance, anybody?), and way too weird and hard to relate to in others. It was like Madeleine L'Engle on hallucinogens, only it made even less sense than that. I've had dreams that were more coherent, with better plotlines and character development -_-;

Alicia posted a review at 2009-03-24 06:26:09 for Little Brother.
(Language: English)
He was a bit patronizing and opinionated with his explanations of tech, and the character is just Corey-Doctorow-as-he-wishes-he-were when he was young, but an interesting update of Orwell's Big Brother with the new technology we have.

Alicia posted a review at 2009-03-24 06:22:14 for Princess Ben.

Started a bit slow and predictable, but good character development.
