Just when I thoguht this book couldn't get more trite or ridiculous, I was proven wrong by the following chapter. I can't believe this book won the pulitzer prize.

Amy posted a review at 2011-06-23 06:25:37 for Stranger in a Strange Land.
(Language: English)
The first third of the book is great; a sci-fi detective story. Unfortunately, it quickly goes downhill. The characters who are interesting and likable at first become annoying, void of self and obnoxious. Particularly disturbing is the portrayal of women in the book, as they are largely whimsical, unintelligent, gullible and subservient. Although in the early 60's this book was shocking, it is now anachronistic both in topic and the dialogue between characters. I don't understand how this book is beloved by anyone, and I certainly can't see how it has garnered such a cult following. |
Amy posted a review at 2011-06-23 06:25:32 for Catch 22.
(Language: English)
Fantastic book that questions authority, patriotism, religion and motivation. It was very convoluted though, and difficult to follow at times.

Loved it! Deeply distrubing though.

The first 30 pages of this book are fantastic. Overall, it's a very interesting book.

Amy posted a review at 2010-05-14 04:24:02 for El Alquimista / The Alchemist.
(Language: English)
The first half of the book is a cute (albeit very simple) adventure story. The second half of the book is boring and preachy. A teenager could have written this book, and probably would have done a better job. This book contributes nothing, and its message is so trite that a child inherently knows what Coelho claims isthe meaning of life. You certainly won't find any new or interestng ideas in this book. |
Amy posted a review at 2010-05-11 05:16:19 for The Plague (Vintage International).
(Language: English)
The first 50 pages and the last 5 pages are the best. The rest is mediocre and rather boring. The book would have been better if Camus developed the characters further (they were basically flat except for Cottard). His critique of modern life and human isolation on the other hand, do strike a cord, but unfortunately it is underdeveloped until the end of the novel.I still find it hard to believe that Camus won a Nobel Peace Prize for The Plague and The Stranger; both are mediocre. |

This is a great book to read if you are an author, particularly an author of fiction. Conversely, if you have not read City of Glass or any of Auster's other novels, you will not be able to fully comprehend this book. I enjoyed that Auster brought characters back from his other books, and this was key to understanding the crux of the novel. Once they are created, the characters have a life of their own and the creater has to cope with how he portrayed them (whether he wronged them), that these characters will be a part of his life forever (as ghosts or at least interruptions in his life), and that they will outlive him indefinitely. |
Amy posted a review at 2010-02-09 09:54:05 for City of Glass The New York Trilogy Volume 1.
(Language: English)
The first few chapters of City of Glass are fantastically written and suspenseful. I really appreciated Auster's examination of language and the book's embrace of existentialism. I did not care for the last few chapters of the book though, which really let me down.

The ending completely ruined it for me. It would have been much more powerful book had the ending been realistic.

Amy posted a review at 2009-06-08 09:35:42 for Slaughterhouse-Five: A Novel.
(Language: English)
I read this while in Dresden. It's very well written and I love the flow of the novel, but could have done without the trip to outerspace. If you can, try to read the novel straight through, in one sitting. I think it would be easiest to follow that way. Overall, a quick and interesting read.

Amy posted a review at 2009-06-02 04:24:11 for Silas Marner.

This was a cute story but not too deep or inspiring. The dialogue is terrible and difficult to get through. Overall, a relatively quick read.

Amy posted a review at 2008-11-11 09:11:55 for Through Our Enemies' Eyes: Osama bin Laden, Radical Islam, and the Future of America, Revised Edition.
(Language: English)
Although the author is overly sensational in his comparision of Osama bin Laden to the American founding fathers (and his comparisons are poorly written), his history of bin Laden and Al-Qaeda is interestng.

Insightful and illuminating of Islam in general. I can see how this book would convert believers or strengthen prior faith.
