Excellent book for programmers who want to get going on Perl. Needed it for a project, got the book, figured things out and got it done.

A very good read with excellent character development and backstories. The discontiguous timeline starts out as annoying but actually works well for the story. But I felt that the ending was too quick. Almost like watching a TV show and there are only 5 minutes left to wrap up all the plot lines.

Horrible. While I am no prude, the 1860s era vulgarity does nothing to improve the stories. And while it is a collection of short stories, some are too long and others too short; none of them are "just right".

Didn't realize this was the 10th book in a series, but author did a good job of keeping the reader informed on the backstory. Unfortunately, in this book, the story wandered and dragged a bit until the end when it all got wrapped up in a way that felt very "oh, no, I have to finish this in the next 5 chapters!" But I liked the characters and will read more of the series.

Pretty good read, mix of at-sea adventure and on-shore goings-on. Slow at times, but 4/5.
