(Language: English)
The best overall bio of Lincoln of the past decade, at the least.

This is a splendid comparison of two of the three great tyrants of the 20th century.

(Language: English)
Exceptionally well written, makes a case against the virtue of Senator Edmond Ross of Kansas, who John Kennedy highlighted in Profiles of Courage as a hero for voting against impeachment. Stewart makes the case for a corrupt bargain. Very up to date, and, I think, very accurate.

A haunting tale about a dying cancer patient in denial, and a friend/caregiver's travails in dealing with her situation.

(Language: English)
I thought this an exceptional look at Adams' Congressional career *after* his Presidency (18 years) and I learned a lot reading it.

(Language: English)
Interesting, full of factoids about the workings of one's brain. A bit technical, but informative.

(Language: English)
I think this is a *very* deep book. I'm reading a copy of a friend's, and am finding it totally fascinating, and probably beyond me in some respects, especially in the linguistics area. But well written, and a solid analysis.

Charlie posted a review at 2009-03-02 22:52:58 for Shadow of the Wolf: An Apache Tale.
(Language: English)
Shadow of the Wolf, An Apache Tale by Harry Plumlee is quite good. A dozen years of age doesn't take a shred away from this tale of the 1860s to 1880s in Apacheria. The story is told from an Apache point of view, the main character who becomes a shaman is in place as the Indian way of life is vanishing, and the white ... Read Moreman has become ubiquitous. His name is Nakaidoklinni (don't ask me to pronounce that!), and his life's course, and that of his wife and child, is all too short. But, powerfully engaging, causing one once again to ponder the senseless cruelties of both whites and Apaches. It also evoked how doomed the Indians as a whole were all the way back to 1519, when the first Spaniards landed in what became the US. I'm so glad I got a chance to see what was probably completely accurate in depicting this man's life in fictional form, and learning about events like the killing of Mangas Coloradas and the Bascom incident from a different perspective.

Charlie posted a review at 2009-01-22 01:52:17 for To Kill a Mockingbird.
(Language: English)
It's hard to say which is better - the book or the movie, but the book wins by an edge. Harper Lee's only novel, it was amazingly powerful about race in the south in the 1950s.
