That this book is nonfiction is chilling. That being said, Anchee Min's story and spirit are truly inspiring, and I recommend this book without reservation.

Bizarre, ghastly, brilliant, hard to stop reading in the same way a bloody car accident is hard not to look at. I was curious about Jelinek since she won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2004, but I'm guessing that had more to do with The Children of the Dead (1997) than this (1983). Even though the novel is masterful, I'm looking forward to having the memory of it fade....
