Janine posted a review at 2010-04-29 04:49:13 for Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall.
(Language: English)
Sumptuously written, kind of a throughback to stories from the past. Would read it again.

May have liked it more if I hadn't read this type of storyline before....

Janine posted a review at 2010-01-16 04:00:29 for Slaughterhouse 5, or The Children's Crusade - A Duty-dance with Death.
(Language: English)
Found this book a bit too erratic for my taste. The connections between plot lines are loose and it's pretty easy to get confused where stories are leading you to.

(Language: English)
Interesting but the hype over this book was a bit much.

Best Nora Roberts book I've read.

Janine posted a review at 2010-01-16 03:42:21 for Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned.
(Language: English)
Excellent protagonist, an ex-con who after committing a crime of violence decides to lead his life by the golden rule. Follow him as he learns or teaches different life lessons and he restarts his life after prison. Powerful. I listened to this as an audiobook and Paul Winfield is the perfect narrator for this kind of story, his deep gravely voice lends to the idea that this character struggles with a rage that simmers just below the surface.... Highly recommended!

Janine posted a review at 2010-01-16 03:32:12 for Butchers Hill: a Tess Monaghan Mystery (Tess Monaghan Mysteries).
(Language: English)
An enjoyable novel, I love this genre and Tess Monaghan's character.

Janine posted a review at 2010-01-16 03:22:06 for Fear the Worst: A Thriller.
(Language: English)
Pretty good family drama. A father's daughter goes missing and the police are out of leads. The father persists in figuring out what happened to her no matter what the cost.

Janine posted a review at 2009-07-22 04:43:22 for FDR.
(Language: English)
A thorough and engaging biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Shows both his strengths and weaknesses. His impressive stamina and happiness in the face of polio was truly couragous. Whether I agree with the New Deal is irrelevant, I learned what programs were created by it and this information adds to the understanding of its appeal. FDR was a true politician and makes for an interesting bigraphical subject.

Janine posted a review at 2009-07-12 07:07:22 for In Big Trouble (Tess Monaghan Mysteries).
(Language: English)
Not as good as the first two, but Lippman keeps the reader drawn into the story even though it's bee transplanted to Texas...

Janine posted a review at 2009-07-07 10:45:26 for Death in Paradise (Jesse Stone).
(Language: English)
Boring and doesn't really unfold so much as you are told what happened. No sense of mystery no build up of who the character really is to feel bad/happy for them. The protagonist is supposed to be a hard boiled detective trying to crawl out of the bottle and conquer his addiction and figure out the puzzle that is his ex-wife, but it really doesn't ring with much depth.

Janine posted a review at 2009-06-23 06:44:15 for The Maltese Falcon.
(Language: English)
A fun and gritty book from back in the old days. I listened to the hollywood acted version that has Sandra Oh, if it's the one from Grey's Anatomy, she's got a great voice for the part. I've seen the movie, but the hollywood dramatization of the book is also entertaining.

Janine posted a review at 2009-06-23 06:41:49 for Murder on K Street: A Capital Crimes Novel.
(Language: English)
Not a bad murder mystery. The protagonist, a friend of the dead senator and his wife is very likable. The bad guys become apparently 30% of the way in but you still want to find out how they get caught. So it's still mildly entertaining.

Janine posted a review at 2009-06-16 06:44:23 for Conspiracy in Death.
(Language: English)
An investigation into a string of murders where organs are removed gets the investigator into a tangled web of conspiring doctors. Though the reality of a future in 2051 seems plausable J.D. Robb's way with words is awkward and seems obnoxious at points. I don't like the heroine that much.

Janine posted a review at 2009-06-16 06:36:16 for 24 Hours.
(Language: English)
A new twist on kidnapping puts the love between family to the test. Well paced but ends a little over dramatically. This book adapts well and was made into the movie Trapped.

Janine posted a review at 2009-06-16 06:30:09 for Night (Oprah's Book Club).
(Language: English)
A good book but would have been more effective if it was one of the first books I've read on the subject. The Holocaust was a deep and tragic event but like all things, the more you hear about it's atrocities the less effect it has on your over time...

Janine posted a review at 2009-06-16 06:18:28 for The Feast of Love (Vintage Contemporaries).
(Language: English)
Enjoyable characters, pretty realistic but the story drags a bit in places.

Janine posted a review at 2009-05-23 07:38:07 for The Cat Who Wasn't There (Cat Who...).
(Language: English)
Foul play is suspected by Qwill's cat when a death occurs during a tour of Scotland. This tale of intrigue although engaging is not as good as some of the others.
|
Janine posted a review at 2009-05-23 07:36:31 for The Cat Who Moved a Mountain (Cat Who...).
(Language: English)
All of these books are great for the young adult set. In this adventure James Qwilleran leaves Pickax for the mountains to see what he wants to do next in his life. As usual the small mountain town has its own secrets and a contested murder pricks Qwill's attention. With the help of his trusted cats he identifies the real culprits.

Janine posted a review at 2009-05-23 07:32:09 for The Woods.
(Language: English)
Engaging and actually had a few delightful twists that weren't obvious to everyone. The author did a good job of fleshing out the protagonist. I would read this again.

Janine posted a review at 2009-05-06 08:09:35 for The 5th Horseman.
(Language: English)
The best book of the series (I've read 1-6).

Janine posted a review at 2009-04-26 03:13:22 for Manhunting.
(Language: English)
A woman in her 30s goes out to a resort in search of her ideal man, according to a practical list of traits. Many men are met but only one can be right for her. This story is very standard plot but a fun light read none-the-less.

Janine posted a review at 2009-04-22 06:45:29 for Double Take (FBI Thriller (Jove Paperback)).
(Language: English)
Coulter weaves in several characters backstories with ease and though the story is engaging the psychic characters are a bit tedious and the story ends kind of ho-hum. I'd probably read another though.
|
Janine posted a review at 2009-04-21 07:35:50 for The Bad Place.
(Language: English)
Dean Koontz definitely goes all over the place with his novels. This one includes teleportings, telekinesis and telepathy. The characters are likable as usual and the pace of the book keeps one reading to the end...
|
Janine posted a review at 2009-04-21 07:33:50 for Whose Body? (Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries).
(Language: English)
The author is trying to write in the style of Conan Doyle but the banter and deducing is much less satisfying. Plus when the author resorts to the murderer writing out a detailed confession it's seems an easy way out...
