This book was very interesting, having been the first I've read by Richard North Patterson. The fictional country, Luandia, was so realistic I was actually naive enough to ask someone else if that was indeed a real country!! However, the author based Luandia on current, and past, situations occuring in Nigeria, so a lot of the reality stems from these comparisons. The book is an easy read and involves a lawyer trying to help Bobby Okari, a modern-day Nelson Mandela, to avoid being convicted and murdered himself for the hangings of three oil workers, which he may or may not have orchestrated. The trial is a sham trial, but the lead attorney is passionate about helping because his college love, who is now married to Okari, begged him to come to Luandia to help them in this dire, traumatic situation. I now want to read all the other books by this author. Many of the characters could have been fleshed out more, but the overall story has much depth and intricicies.

A very good read, interesting and fast paced. It has come under fire for being historically inaccurate, but is compelling nonetheless.

Everyone should know where the phrase "Big Brother is Watching You" was popularized. The thought police should make all people read this book...A compelling cautionary tale about the potentially imminent horrors of an alternate future society where the government controls EVERYTHING, including people's very thoughts.

One of those books that the movie actually does justice. Fast-paced and exciting. It is a quick read and leaves you wanting more by Dan Brown...

Most people were forced to read this in school. If they weren't, they should have been. We must never, ever forget the atrocities of the Holocaust and this diary of a young girl terrified and in hiding from the Nazis is a compelling read.

I did not enjoy this as much as Angels & Demons and The Da Vinci Code, but it is still quite well written and interesting.

Karen posted a review at for Fight Club: A Novel.
(Language: English)
Yes, I loved this movie, but now I know it wasn't just because Brad Pitt is God's gift to women...This book is a must-read for anyone who has seen the movie because it surpasses the movie in so many ways. In the book, the reader begins to realize the big picture much more quickly than in the movie where many were likely fooled until the very end. This creates a feeling of empathy and suspense for the character during his psychologically twisted, manic jaunts all over the nation, causing mayhem and misunderstanding himself at every step. But other than that, all I can tell you is #1. The first rule of fight club is you don't talk about Fight Club. $2. The 2nd rule of fight club is you don't talk about Fight Club

This book is an excellent first foray into the realm of Chuck Palahniuk. His mind is twisted, his wit sharp and his writing extremely entertaining and interesting. This is the acclaimed author of "Fight Club", a movie many people, like me, watched in abject horror and loved. While the title (and the cover!) is controversial, the book is actually NOT about what the title implies. Obviously, the author relishes a kind of in-your-face style, but it is all part of the appeal of his taut, forceful prose.
