I picked up this book because, over the years, I read several articles written by Soros. Moreover he made a lot of money correctly predicting macro economic and political shifts around the world. In fact, in this book, he forecasts the financial crisis several months in advance. The book itself was tough reading though. It was more of an argumentative research paper defending the decisions Soros made and supporting the work his foundations are doing. I found myself in agreement with most of his ideas, so it's still a good read, but you'd probably be better off reading online articles and op-ed pieces in various news papers by Soros.

I have to admit Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilemma is one of the most influential books I've read in the health and well being genre. Omnivore's Dilemma really makes you think about what the food you eat does to you. The timing couldn't have been better, there is a new study almost every month that shows that Americans are getting more and more obese by the day; food, of course, being the primary cause.

This book offers a great insight into the evolution of entrepreneurship in post-independence India. The author
uses his personal observations and experiences effectively to narrate a convincing story of how a few key individuals and communities woke India up from its bureaucratic slumber. With the Indian economy on a tear, this book serves as a tribute to the gritty entrepreneurs that braved corrupt government institutions to bring in this era of prosperity.

A somber, soulful tale of a house wife in the pre-independence India. I am a big fan of R.K. Narayan's Malgudi Days, so when a friend recommended Dark Room, I expected a light reading. I was pleasantly surprised to find a book that delicately weaves an intricate story of marital relationships in Indian middle class families. Even though it was set in the 30's the story of a house wife's stuggle to keep her family intact in the face of adversities rings true in many families across the numerous villages and small towns of India, even today.

didn't like itit was okliked itloved itit was amazing
I read Animal Farm when I was in junior high, in Delhi. It was eye-opening for me. Having been brought up on left-leaning history and sociology textbooks prescribed by the Indian government, that might very well have been written in soviet russia, I naively thought communism good and all capitalism evil. Animal Farm is a timeless classic that serves as a reminder of how an idealistic, impractical quest for a utopian society can lead to a worse, more unjust one.

Simply amazing. I still don't believe that everything in the book happened to one person, but even if a tenth of that is true, it is quite simply amazing. I have to admit that I learned more about Bombay from the book than I ever did growing up in India. The book is certainly dense but it's a page turner and I went through it faster than I thought I would.
